Illegal immigrant arrested for indecent exposure at Meijer’s

An illegal immigrant from El Salvador faces deportation from the U.S. after he was arrested on charges that he exposed himself to a shopper at a Meijer store in Rochester Hills.

Daniel Alfredo Torres-Rivas appeared Monday in 52-3 District Court and entered a not-guilty plea to a single count of aggravated indecent exposure, a misdemeanor which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $2,000. He was issued a $1,000 bond.

Following the arraignment, Torres-Rivas was picked up from the Oakland County Jail by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agents and placed into federal custody on charges of entering the country illegally. Sheriff’s deputies say Torres-Rivas applied for a Visa into the U.S. and was turned down.

“I find it completely disgusting and sad that this individual, who is illegally in our country, felt comfortable enough here to harass a woman in a very public store by masturbating to completion,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a prepared statement. “I thank the tipster who helped us lock up this sick pervert.”

Torres-Rivas is accused of exposing himself on Aug. 16 to a female shopper inside the Meijer store at 3175 Rochester Road. The victim, 24, told police she observed a man exposing his genitals and making sexually explicit motions in her direction.

She called 9-1-1 from the store, but the suspect managed to flee the area before deputies arrived. Investigators say there was no physical contact between the suspect and the shopper.

Three days later, on Aug. 19, sheriff’s deputies received a tip that the suspect was living at home on Crittenden Street in Pontiac. Authorities went to the house but were unable to locate the suspect. A short time later, however, they heard from an attorney representing Torres-Rivas, and he turned himself in.

Detectives say they could not find any criminal history for Torres-Rivas.
