No one gives me any credit for speaking about girl power: Qandeel Baloch

In this candid interview, Qandeel tells all about her marriage controversy, her past, and 'that' music video
Updated 15 Jul, 2020

This piece was first published in July 2016.

The music video Qandeel Baloch made her debut in last week all but faded from our radars as a new controversy surfaced yesterday: that the young social media celebrity was previously married.

Speaking to Dawn, a man called Ashiq Hussain claims he married Qandeel in 2008 and that the couple had a son who now lives with him.

Ashiq says the marriage ended in 2009 and that, contrary to Qandeel's claims, he never physically abused her. According to him, Qandeel hoped to have an independent life and wanted a divorce: "She said, 'mujhe apni azaad zindagi chahiye... She wanted to do whatever she wanted."

In this candid interview, Qandeel tells her side of the story, touching on her marriage, how she took to social media, and why she made that music video.

Images: Can you tell us how your marriage took place? What happened?

Qandeel Baloch: I didn’t run away from home. I’ve been dealing with the problem all day, telling everyone, attending their calls, telling the media. Media is not supporting me. They’re saying that I want to marry Imran Khan but I’m already married. This is wrong. What about my self-worth? My identity? I am a social media sensation, I am a fashion icon. I don’t know HOW many girls have felt support through my persona. I’m a girl power. So many girls tell me I’m a girl power, and yes, I am.

I was 17 years old when my parents forced an uneducated man on me. The abuse I have been through… It happens in places like this, in small villages, in Baloch families. This happened to me too.

"I never accepted him as my husband in my heart or mind," says Qandeel of her husband.
"I never accepted him as my husband in my heart or mind," says Qandeel of her husband.

I said, ‘No, I don’t want to spend my life this way’. I was not made for this. It was my wish since I was a child to become something, to be able to stand on my own two feet, to do something for myself.

But then they married me off when I was 17, 18. I was not happy and never accepted him as my husband.

What do you think will happen in a forced marriage? With an uneducated man, an animal. What would I say, that I am already married? Why would I say it?

I never accepted him as my husband in my heart or mind.

How I spent a year and a half with him, only I know. And I only did it because of the child. Otherwise I wouldn’t have spent even one month with him.

Images: Why do you call him an animal?

Qandeel: He is. The kind of torture he has inflicted on me, you can’t even imagine. Why? Because I was cute, I was young. He was older than me. He didn’t trust me. I don’t know why. I couldn’t connect with him on an intellectual level. Our ideas were very different.

Then I had a child, so I sacrificed. I spent a year and a half with him. After the child, I told him I want to study. I want to complete my education, I want to get a job, I want to stand on my own two feet. But he never agreed.

My family never supported me. I would say I don’t want to live with him, but they didn’t support me.

That man tried to throw acid on me. He said ‘I’ll burn your face because you’re so beautiful’. And today the media isn’t giving me any credit for speaking about empowerment of women, girl power.

Qandeel claims she ran away from her husband and found support in Darul Aman.
Qandeel claims she ran away from her husband and found support in Darul Aman.

They don’t recognize that this girl fought. Today I am capable of taking on the burden of an entire household. But no one gives me credit for that.

Images: Can you tell us a little bit more about your journey? Last time we spoke, you said you were around 17-18 when your parents let you do TV serials on PTV.

Qandeel: I was 17-18 when I got married. When I was 19 years old… I had a child within one year. Then there were fights, arguments, being violent with me. Then when my family didn’t support me, I ran away and found support in Darul Aman. That was my right.

I didn’t know what I would do ahead. It was in Multan. The child was with me. I had kept him with me because he was really young. He fell ill in Darul Aman. He was so sick, everyone told me that I should give him back to his father, that if anything happened to him, God forbid, they would do a case on me. I had to give my son back to them.

After that, I was discharged from there. I thought now I am capable of doing this on my own. I did a job, I completed my Matric and my Bachelors. I did a marketing job, I worked as a bus hostess, I did a lot of jobs, I struggled a lot. I got out from there. The first thing I did when I got out of Darul Aman was my Matric. Then I did my Bachelors privately, I kept doing it. I did quite few jobs, in Daewoo, in Lever Brothers. Quite a few jobs. Then after a while, I started working in showbiz.

Images: When did you start working in showbiz?

Qandeel: It was about 2012, 2013. I started from zero. Small fashion shows, small photoshoots. I’ve seen a lot. I’ve seen a lot of things up close. I married my sister off, I gave jahez (dowry) for her wedding, I tried to keep relations going with my family, I bought a house for them in Multan. My parents are settled in Multan, my house is there.

The social media celeb says she tried to keep in touch with her son, now estranged.

Now today all of this is happening, people are filing cases against me. Now he’s standing up and saying I’m his wife. Where was he before?

Images: Are you divorced?

Qandeel: Yes, I got divorced.

Images: But it wasn’t a written divorce?

Qandeel: Talaaq ho gayi thi, khula ho gaya tha.

Images: So if you’re divorced, why is he only surfacing now?

Qandeel: I don’t know. I can’t understand.

Images: Has he been in touch with you?

Qandeel: No, we haven’t had any contact.

Images: Would you like to talk about your child?

Qandeel: What should I say about my child? It’s his child. His son.

Images: How do you feel about him [your child]?

Qandeel: I tried a lot to keep him close to me. But they didn’t let me speak to him.

I thought when my child is older, he’ll understand, he’ll see the environment there and feel that his mother was right, that she did what was right.

"You know how they try to misuse girls who are new to the industry," says Qandeel.
"You know how they try to misuse girls who are new to the industry," says Qandeel.

Images: Given your upbringing, how did you reach where you are today? You say that you’ve done really bold stuff. How did this happen?

Qandeel: I’ve fought with everyone . And now I have become so headstrong that I only do what I want. I started working in showbiz, I faced so many difficulties, you know what happens with girls here. You know what kinds of offers they make girls here. You know how they try to misuse girls who are new to the industry.

You could say that this is my revenge [from this country]. I don’t do these things happily.

Images: What do you mean what you do is an act of revenge?

Qandeel: Nothing is good in this society. This mardon ki society (patriarchal society) is bad. You probably know this already, think about the problems you face yourself.

Being a girl, think yourself, how difficult it is to move around as a woman in this society. How many men do you encounter who bother you? The same way, I have struggled through difficulties to make a place for myself in showbiz. It was very difficult. What kind of problems I have faced, I don’t think anyone can understand.

Qandeel says her next video will be planned better.
Qandeel says her next video will be planned better.

I want to give my followers a positive message, I want to give those girls a positive message who have been forcefully married, who continue to sacrifice. I want to be an example for those people. That’s my aim.

Images: We also wanted to speak to you about the video you did recently.

Qandeel: What’s wrong with it?

Images: Nothing’s wrong with it, we just wanted to ask you a few questions.

Qandeel: Okay...

Images: Why did you decide to do the video?

Qandeel: The song was nice and I liked it, that one line in there, “Don’t do it again."

I like Beyond Studio’s work. They have quality work. If there is a good offer after this, I will do it again, definitely, why not? I have my own plans for a music video after this which I have to start work on.

Qandeel says she isn't happy with the 'cheap' clothes in this video.

Images: How do you know Aryan Khan?

Qandeel: I don’t know Aryan, but I know Jibran who is the owner of Beyond Studio. I did it through him. I’m not satisfied with it.

Images: Why not?

Qandeel: Because I wasn’t so satisfied with my performance. You know, I haven’t learnt how to twerk properly. (laughs) I think I’ll have to take lessons.

I was trying to start a new trend in Pakistan, main ne socha acha trend start karoon.

People are criticizing me, saying I’m copying Nicki Minaj and Mia Khalifa. They enjoy their videos, why not Qandeel Baloch?

My work is entertainment, and I look at what entertains people. Whether it’s a selfie video or a music video.

Images: Where are the outfits you wore from?

Qandeel: Yaar, aap style ki baat kar rahi ho… I wasn’t satisfied with the outfits. They are my own clothes. Theek hai, theek ho gya. I chose the outfits, but it could have been much better. It was my first experience with a music video. Actually, I’ve done one before called 'Touch of Lady', but that was experimental. This was also experimental for me, in a way. Next time I will plan it properly. I will work with Beyond again.

Qandeel starred in this video with 21-year-old singer Aryan Khan.

Images: When did you shoot the video?

Qandeel: We shot it during Ramazan, we worked really quickly on it because it had to be released on Eid.

Images: What is the theme of the video supposed to be?

Qandeel: The makers had a theme in mind, that they wanted to do it this way.

I was a little scared when they were releasing it. I said don’t do it right now… I had some problems with some shots. They didn’t remove those shots, they said it wouldn’t be problematic at all. You’ve seen the reaction, these things are just making me stronger.

Images: How much would you rate the video out of 10 and why?

Qandeel: (long pause) 10/10. Why not? I broke a record in Pakistan, no one has done this before. Fine, the wardrobe is cheap, I agree it’s cheap. Fine, I don’t know how to dance. But look at my confidence. Look at the videography and professional work.

Images: What’s your favourite song of all time?

Qandeel: 'Ajnabi Hawayen' from the film Shaapit.

I want to say a few things, please. -An uneducated girl gets an uneducated man, what's wrong with that? -She says she was cute, really? We are seeing the photos and the couple looks perfect for each other. -She was not 17, 18 at the time of marriage, her nikah nama says 20... -She says they exploit girls in showbiz... why is she the one taking off her clothes and being famous for all kind of vulgar stuff? She should not get the kind of coverage she is getting.

I completely get what she is saying...kudos to her for being so brave. She is using social media to get over her many disadvantages that she started with (education, pedigree) and earning fame....nothing wrong with that at all. She is giving people what they want and/or like to see. All the haters in the comments and elsewhere still see her videos and follow her on social media. We seem to be ok with the Kardashians, Minajs and other western celebrities doing this type of stuff but thumb our nose at someone like her who is trying to break through in an exceptionally male-dominated society. I'm especially impressed with her self-awareness - she knows where she needs to improve!!! You go girl! more power and fame to you and may you prosper!!!

Let it rest at that. She may not be the desirable type for our so-called altruistic society, no one has the right to pass a judgement on any one. Why someone's marriage or divorce is such a public spectacle in the country? It is a private matter, be it Imran Khan or Qandeel Baloch or any body else. Media has nothing better to do. It is a common knowledge that marriages are arranged or even forced by the parents and personal choice can result in honour killing. Instead of reforming this evil institution, media turns it into an entertainment. shame.

A very brave and determined woman. Everyone has their own limitations. It's easy for affluent city people to mock her on her English skills. But she has done more to challenge Pakistani taboos, taboos which enable the treatment women as second class citizens, than anyone else ever has. There can of course be other ways of challenging the status quo, ways which are not as shocking, but this is a perfectly legitimate way. In some ways, this is the most appropriate way of responding to the types of nasty ways in which women are shamed and humiliated into submission in Pakistan. Qandeel Baloch is exactly what this country needs. Pakistani women can disown her now, but in 20 years, she'll be the one whom all women will point to as the person who freed them. This is unfortunately how the world works.

Its attitudes like yours with prescriptive and ignorant attitudes to other peoples personal lives which close down women in rural parts of Pakistan. Congratulations, Qandeel, for taking such a bold step to hopefully shock Pakistani society into doing some very serious thinking about how so many women are treated and made to feel worthless and powerless. How many men have actually thought about how they would feel or react if they were consistently told: where they can and can't go; whom to mix with; what to wear and not to wear; who they are obliged to marry; what career or job they can and can't have... is it humanly possible to live a happy and fulfilling life under these conditions??? At some point, whatever has been simmering under the lid is bound to explode. Perhaps, along the lines of #Girls in Green, there could be a sort of #Girls are Out, where women get together and go out in miniskirts just to make a point. Hats off to you, qandeel. May more women stand up and take charge of their lives, and claim their rightful place in society.

Credit for "Girl Power" - I guess Malala Yousufzai also fought for "Girl Power"! I personally like Malala's approach! Having said that, I still regret her passing away. You might disagree with her values, but it does not give you the right to take her life!

I am in deep shock as I read her interview 2 days back here at Dawn and now came to know that she has been honored killed . This is not new to South Asian countries and happens in India even after much development and relatively educated people. The question that I want to ask with my Pakistani friends is that if that was guilty of wearing less cloth in those videos then what about the Director, Actor and Producer of that Song/Video. What about people who downloaded her video and watched so many a time... So in short everyone is wrong, but then who are these people to give justice. If she has done something wrong then Allah will punish her , who are you to decide. Wake up Guys, it is not about Qandel but it is for humanity, you freedom and your progress.

I feel really sad on the sad death of Qandeel Baloch and I certainly will never condone or agree with the notion that someone can be killed for honour. But plz be very clear that whatever she was doing can in no way be linked to girl power or things of such sort.

@Lahore kid You would never allow?! Who put you in charge? Such a weak coward unable to handle a woman's freedom. You do not own any other human being. Only yourself.

Qandeel Baloch was a talented, bold, motivated and highly confident lady. In a conservative society she tried to make a space in show biz. She will be remembered for her bravery.
