Nostalgia is powerful in advertising, but is it enough for brands? Walmart's latest ad featuring Nia Long and Larenz Tate struck all the right emotional chords. For many Black people—including me—it's not just a commercial; it's a love letter to the cultural significance of Love Jones. ❤️ As one of my favorite rom-coms, Love Jones holds a special place in my heart, so I'll admit this was an ad I watched more than once. 🥰 The nods to the movie were intentional and perfect—the Isley Brothers playing in the background, the record player spinning, and the sweet moment when the daughter takes a photo. But here's the thing: consumers are paying attention to more than just what companies SAY—they're watching what companies DO. While Walmart released this ad celebrating Black culture, it's also been reported that they've scaled back some DEI initiatives. And that timing feels worth reflecting on. Black consumers wield over $1.6 trillion in spending power—making it clear that this is not just a cultural conversation but also an economic one. 🤔 Marketing campaigns like this one work because they show care and understanding, but meaningful actions behind the scenes matter just as much. 💯 Here's what Walmart got right: ✔️Tapped into cultural relevance and Nostalgia with the perfect cast and storyline. ✔️ Showed they know their audience—by honoring a beloved classic with intentional details that Black audiences immediately recognized. However, I read mixed reviews on the ad because of Walmart's actions.  Here's what I'd say consumers want to see next: ✔️ Authentic investment in the communities they're speaking to. ✔️ DEI initiatives that move beyond marketing campaigns and into boardrooms, hiring, and community reinvestment. This ad reminded me of how powerful storytelling can be in marketing. One content creator even asked Walmart to help make a Love Jones 2 happen. 🤣 Nostalgia makes us feel seen, but corporate responsibility ensures we're valued. As black women, I do not understand why we are upset. 78 percent of all DEI initiatives benefit white women. LOOK IT UP, it's a proven fact. I am pleased that DEI is being rolled back since, as usually, we are the last to receive any benefits under DEI. The amount of business we receive from DEI is 1.7%. SO BLACK WOMEN TAKE YOUR CAPES OFF, THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT! As far as boycotting Target is concerned, this is a company that does a great deal of business with black individuals.
