SkyWest Airlines Flight 5971 landed safely at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport around 8 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 28, after the crew reported encountering severe turbulence and a pressurization issue. Operations are normal after the FAA briefly paused some flights into Boston Logan International Airport on Monday, Aug. 25, due to a disabled aircraft on the runway. The disabled aircraft was a Cessna 402 with two blown tires. You can find real-time flight delay information at www.fly.faa.gov.

Local authorities notified the FAA that they discovered the wreckage of a Pitts S-1T southwest of Phoenix on Wednesday, August 13. Only the pilot was on board. The FAA issued an Alert Notice (ALNOT) on August 12 to alert public safety agencies, pilots and airports about the missing aircraft. All Nippon Airways Flight 9397 struck the tail of Breeze Airways Flight 509 while taxiing at Charleston International Airport in South Carolina around 10:15 p.m. local time on Friday, July 18. Flight 509, an Airbus A200, was parked when the incident occurred. Passengers were bused to the terminal. Only the crew was on board Flight 9397, a Boeing 787. The FAA will investigate. An air traffic controller instructed United Airlines Flight 2151 to perform a go-around at Denver International Airport because an aircraft was slow to exit the runway. The event occurred around 12:40 p.m. local time on Tuesday, April 22. The required separation was maintained.


Background

A go-around is a safe, routine maneuver performed at the discretion of a pilot or at the request of an air traffic controller. It discontinues the landing approach and returns the aircraft to an altitude and configuration to safely make another approach. The pilot and the air traffic controller are in full command of the situation.

The FAA has produced a video explaining the go-around process, what’s happening during the event and how pilots and air traffic controllers work together to ensure safety and efficiency as the aircraft is maneuvered for another landing approach.

The crew of Republic Airways Flight 4514 initiated a go-around at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in response to an onboard alert that a military helicopter was nearby. Air traffic controllers issued traffic advisories to both aircraft and the military helicopter crew reported they had the Republic aircraft in sight.  There was no loss of required separation between the aircraft.
