Unjustifiably high prices set by multinationals in Europe

Question for written answer E-001597/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Georgios Aftias (PPE)
In May 2024, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, wrote a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, urging her ‘to make the Single Market more competitive and transparent for consumers, for a Europe that improves the living standards of its citizens’. Kyriakos Mitsotakis was crystal clear in his request for immediate action.
The issue primarily concerns Greece and Greek consumers, but also countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Luxembourg and Slovakia. However, the European Union is long overdue in solving this problem.
In view of the above:
- 1.When will a solution be found to the problem of multinational companies setting different, higher prices for basic goods in Greece and in other countries without any justification and how will the problem be resolved?
- 2.What measures will the Commission take to protect consumers from the arbitrary actions of multinational giants and unfair commercial practices?
- 3.Will the Commission impose fines on multinationals that profiteer at the expense of Greek and European consumers?
