A FedEx contract delivery driver from Alabama is jailed in Florida after authorities say he dumped dozens of packages in woods or on the roadside instead of delivering them.
Latavion Lewis, 28, is charged with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft and illegal dumping, according to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began Saturday when authorities were alerted to the discarded packages.
Homes County is close to the Alabama state line.
Investigators contacted FedEx to assist in identifying the driver assigned to deliver the missing packages. FedEx identified Lewis, a contracted worker from Alabama, as the individual responsible for delivery.
Lewis has addresses listed in Mongomery and Houston counties.
Deputies made contact with Lewis, who agreed to meet with deputies at the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office.
During the interview, Lewis admitted to deputies that, due to the late hour, he chose to discard the undelivered packages at several locations rather than return them to the FedEx warehouse.
Authorities recovered 44 packages. The recovered packages went to the Bonifay Post Office, which ensured they were delivered to their rightful owners.
Lewis remained held Monday in the Holmes County Jail.
