The Cleveland Browns will be without quarterback Deshaun Watson for the remainder of the 2024 season after an MRI on Monday confirmed that Watson suffered a torn Achilles tendon during Sunday’s game.

The Browns confirmed the injury and Watson’s status for the rest of the season Monday afternoon.

The injury ends Watson’s season after just seven games and is the second consecutive year that he has suffered a season-ending injury. In three seasons with the Browns, Watson has only been able to play a total of 19 games due to injuries and a suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Our initial story on Watson’s injury

The Cleveland Browns welcomed back RB Nick Chubb in Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season against the Cincinnati Bengals. During the second quarter of the Battle of Ohio, QB Deshaun Watson attempted a QB draw but on his first step his leg buckled underneath of him.

Watson immediately went down with the replay showing a concerning shudder up his right leg at the moment of the injury. Cleveland’s quarterback was carted off the field and was seen crying.

At the time of the injury, the Browns were down 7-0 after an opening kickoff return for a touchdown. Watson had completed 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Watson was emotional as he was being carted off:

Including the attempt on the injury, Watson had also rushed twice for zero yards.

Cleveland made Dorian Thompson-Robinson the backup for this game over Jameis Winston.

The concern for an Achilles tear is clear from the video but we will wait for information from the team.

Update:

The team has ruled Watson out officially with an Achilles injury:

NFL Network is reporting it is likely season-ending:

Update 2:

Unsurprising, since Achilles injuries are generally “is it there or not?” types, HC Kevin Stefanski all but confirmed that Watson will be out the rest of the season:
