Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) has met in El Salvador with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran illegal immigrant who was deported by the Trump administration due to an administrative error.

Van Hollen shared a photo of his meeting with Abrego Garcia on Thursday that shows the pair sitting down in what appeared to be an outdoor restaurant setting.

"I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar," the senator wrote in a statement on X. "Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return."

Their meeting comes after the vice president of El Salvador, Félix Ulloa, had denied his request to meet with Abrego Garcia, according to the senator, and instead suggested he go through the U.S. embassy to facilitate the visit.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele also published images of their meeting and jokingly pointed out that Garcia was healthy and uninjured.

"Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously risen from the 'death camps & 'torture', now sipping margaritas," Bukele wrote on X.

In a separate post, Bukele stressed that Abrego Garcia would be returned to prison after their meeting.

"Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody," he wrote.

The senator traveled to El Salvador to check on Abrego Garcia’s well-being on behalf of his family and to push for his release. Abrego Garcia was living with his wife and child, both U.S. citizens, in Maryland when he was arrested.

The White House said that the case is out of its hands unless El Salvador decides to send Abrego Garcia back to the United States. But Bukele said the notion of returning him was "preposterous."

The Trump administration said that Abrego Garcia was in the country illegally and had a lawful deportation order. When he was arrested, he was found with rolls of cash and drugs and arrested along with other gang members. Two separate judges have also found that he was affiliated with the MS-13 gang, the administration said.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also revealed that Abrego Garcia's wife sought a restraining order in 2021 against him due to domestic violence. The senator and the mainstream media have peddled a "sob story" about a brutal MS-13 gang member, according to DHS.
Meanwhile, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said he was grateful for the senator's leadership in ensuring Abrego Garcia's safety and pushing for his release.

It is unclear exactly how Van Hollen was finally granted a visit after being rejected the day before.
