Ukrainian parliament extends martial law, general mobilization

MOSCOW. April 16 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian parliament extended martial law and general mobilization on Wednesday, Ukrainian media said, citing a statement by parliament member Yaroslav Zheleznyak on a social network.

Martial law and mobilization will be extended in Ukraine for 90 days, from 5:30 a.m. on May 9 through August 6.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky submitted respective bills to the parliament.

Martial law was declared in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and repeatedly extended.

Kiev officials said on numerous occasions that martial law made presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine impossible.

The presidential term of Zelensky expired in May 2024, which makes him illegitimate in the eyes of Russian officials. U.S. President Donald Trump has called for holding a presidential election in Ukraine.
