SHREVEPORT, La. – A 911 call about suspects breaking into vehicles ended with a homeowner shooting one of them early Saturday morning, according to Shreveport police.

Police identified the suspect who was shot as Jamelvion Lewis, 18. He was taken to Ochsner LSU Health with life-threatening injuries. But his condition has since been upgraded to critical but stable, and doctors are hopeful he will make a full recovery.

Violent Crimes detectives believe Lewis and at least one other person are responsible for a series of crimes in the area, including at least five vehicle burglaries, one firearm theft, and one motor vehicle theft, Cpl. Chris Bordelon said in a news release Saturday night.

The shooting was reported around 3:30 a.m. in the 7600 block of University Drive. The 911 caller said when the suspects saw him making a call they began approaching.

Fearing for his and his family’s safety, the caller discharged his firearm twice, striking Lewis in the upper body, Bordelon said.

When officers arrived, they immediately began giving first aid to Lewis until EMS arrived.

The officers found Lewis was armed with a firearm, which was later confirmed to have been reported stolen out of Bossier City through the National Crime Information Center.

The second suspect drove away in the stolen vehicle but abandoned it a short distance away before running away. He remains at large.

The 911 caller surrendered his firearm and fully cooperated with investigators. Witnesses at the scene were transported to the Violent Crimes Unit for recorded interviews.

Lewis has been charged with one count of possession of a stolen firearm. Additional charges are expected.

At this time, there are no charges pending against the 911 caller.
