NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston officials have released 911 calls from witnesses who were present when a Tesla charging station was set on fire near the Tanger Outlets on Friday night.

Police responded to the calls coming from the Mellow Mushroom restaurant on Tanger Boulevard.

One call was from a woman who told the dispatcher she was charging her car at the time when the man approached her vehicle.

Caller 1: “He had something like a bottle in his hand and then he knocked on my window. I unplugged my car and just drove away. When I was driving away, I saw smoke and it looked like he was lighting something on fire, I’m not really sure.”

Another caller said he saw the man start the fires before running off.

Caller 2: “They’re all over the charges. They’re still burning but they’re starting to go out. He actually got on fire and his shirt was burning for a minute but he ran off.”

Officials say the arsonist spray-painted “Long live the Ukraine” on the ground next to the chargers.

No injuries were reported in connection to the incident.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now investigating the reported arson.
