Freddie Oversteegen was only 14 when she joined the Dutch resistance during World War II, and only a couple of years older when she became one of its armed assassins. Nüshu is a language system used exclusively by women in ancient China, primarily in the Hunan Province. It was created in the 13th century and served as a means of communication and emotional support for women who were not allowed to read or write in Chinese.
In ancient China, women were expected to fulfill traditional gender roles, such as caring for their families and obeying their husbands and fathers. They were not allowed to receive an education, and reading and writing were considered unnecessary skills for their expected roles.
However, Nüshu provided an outlet for women to express themselves and communicate with each other in secret. It was taught by older women to younger ones, and it contained about 600 characters. Women used it to record personal experiences, songs, poems, and stories that were passed down from generation to generation.
