Texas A&M’s Queer Empowerment Council observing ‘Day of Drag’ in protest against recent ban
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Two days after the Texas A&M System Board of Regents passed a resolution banning on-campus drag shows, the Queer Empowerment Council announced they would be observing “Day of Drag” later this week in protest of the ban.
In honor of the upcoming Day of Drag, the student organization which hosts and organizes Draggieland announced its intentions to stand out on social media, asking for supporters to show up in their “best drag outfits” on Thursday, Mar. 6. In the post, they said “Draggieland was banned from campus due to harmful misconceptions, but we refuse to be silent. Drag is self-expression.”
In the resolution passed on Friday, the Board of Regents said events held on campus must focus on promoting A&M’s educational mission. To do that, they banned drag shows across the system’s 11 universities.

That resolution further stated, “The Board finds that it is inconsistent with the System’s mission and core values of its Universities, including the value of respect for others.”
The Board of Regents said there were other event spaces off campuses where events such as drag shows could be held and their decision is in line with a recent executive order from the office of the president of the United States.
Last Friday, the organization said it would be looking for alternative spaces to continue the event, but would begin processing refunds for those who had already bought tickets.
