      An officer was killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting reported at UPMC Memorial Hospital on Innovation Drive and Roosevelt Avenue in York County on Saturday afternoon.West York Borough Police say one of their officers has been killed. In a post on Facebook, the police department identified the fallen officer as Andrew Duarte. In a press briefing at the hospital, District Attorney Timothy Barker said Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz entered the hospital carrying a bag containing a handgun and zip ties around 10:35 a.m.Archangel-Ortiz then went to the ICU and held hostage multiple members of the UPMC staff, where he discharged his weapon, shooting three staff members.A nurse and a custodian who were shot are in stable condition. Another doctor was grazed by a bullet and didn’t need medical attention.A fourth staff member sustained injuries from a fall during the incident.UPMC Officer responded to the incident immediately and Archangel-Ortiz shot at them. 911 was informed of the situation, causing multiple law enforcement agencies including the Pennsylvania State Police and the York County Quick Response Team to respond to the scene.Law enforcement made a formation to engage with Archangel-Ortiz and found he was holding a staff member at gunpoint.Archangel-Ortiz ordered the police to get back, and they did so to keep the hostage safe.Officers attempted to talk to and disengage Archangel-Ortiz while they created a new formation.Archangel-Ortiz then came forward while holding the hostage at gunpoint and police fired at and killed the gunman.Three officers were struck in the exchange.A Springettsberry Township officer and a North York County Regional officer are in stable condition.West York Borough police officer Andrew Duarte was killed in the exchange.“It is absolutely clear and beyond any and all doubt that the officers were justified in taking their action and using deadly force,” said Barker.Barker said Archangel-Ortiz did have contact with the ICU earlier this week for a medical purpose that involved another individual.WellSpan York Hospital said five patients from the shooting were being treated at their hospital. The first was brought in around noon on Saturday.On Feb. 23, WellSpan confirmed that two of those patients have been released.They are unable to share more information on the patients due to HIPAA privacy limitations.At the time of the shooting, UPMC advised families of patients arriving on the site to report to the parking lot of the OSS building across the street from the hospital.A hotline has been set up for available for families of patients seeking more information. It can be reached at 717-849-5338 or 717-849-5334.WellSpan Health is said they are enhancing security measures at York Hospital during and after the incident out of an abundance of caution.This includes restricting movement in and out of facilities during emergency situations in cooperation with law enforcement. WellSpan also said they have utilized metal detectors and have had an armed officer at their Emergency Department entrance for the last two years.They have also implemented Strongline, "a real-time incident notification system and badge for WellSpan team members to press when in a threatening situation." This program has been implemented across 187 WellSpan locations.At the press briefing Saturday, Governor Josh Shapiro ordered the United States and Commonwealth flags to fly at half-staff immediately in honor of fallen police officer Andrew Duarte.
