NEW YORK (WRGB) — The Collins Correctional Facility in Erie County is currently on lockdown, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Officials stated that the lockdown is being implemented for safety reasons.
New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association tells us that three dorms were taken over by inmates and that staff were removed.
Since the incident began, two of the dorms are under control and re-staffed. They are working on securing the third dorm as of this writing.
We're told that Corrections Emergency Response Teams responded from nearby prisons.
The situation involved the use of force, leading to the recovery of two cell phones.
Following the discovery, other incarcerated individuals in the dorm became agitated and attempted to check on the individual in possession of the phones. However, no injuries were reported among the incarcerated individuals.
Facility staff and supervisors successfully de-escalated the situation, and the incarcerated individuals returned to their cubes. Later, due to various potential threats, staff exited three dorms without incident, and no hostages were taken.
According to Kenny Gold, Vice president of the Western Region for NYSCOPBA, three corrections officers sustained minor injuries.
Recent reported past incidents at that facility include nine officers injured June 12. On Aug. 4, 11 officers were hospitalized after coming into contact with a substance after trying to help an inmate.
Back in February 2022, three officers were injured in an attack by an inmate, but those injuries were minor.
However, DOCCS statement says,
Everyone is safe, One officer sustained a minor injury but returned to duty. The facility will remain locked down for a full facility frisk.
This is a breaking story, check back for updates.
