Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass only recently realized that L.A. doesn’t have a sanctuary city law on the books, she told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener.
Former Mayor Eric Garcetti signed an executive directive declaring L.A. a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants, but it was never voted into an enforceable law. Bass said that needs to change before Donald Trump is sworn in as president.
“I was actually surprised about that because I thought we were a sanctuary city for years,” she said. “So what the difference is is the policies that were put in place were not permanent policies. So I imagine that the council will be voting on sanctuary cities hopefully very, very soon.”
Bass said she’s going to do whatever she can to make sure the policy gets to the City Council so it can be voted on before the end of the year.

Despite Trump’s rhetoric on the campaign trail about spending an unlimited amount of money and using the military to deport millions of immigrants, Bass said she doubts “that form of rhetoric can actually be implemented.”
