Suppression, Deception, Snobbery, and Bias: Why the Press Gets So Much Wrong―And Just Doesn't Care Hardcover – July 12, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Russian collusion. The lab-leak theory. The Hunter Biden laptop. Mostly peaceful protests. What if America’s misinformation problem is coming from inside the mainstream media?
Fox contributor Ari Fleischer says most Americans live in a media-created fantasyland. Never before have we been so information-rich yet so poorly informed. America’s liberal media keeps getting the news wrong.
In Suppression, Deception, Snobbery, and Bias, Fleischer notes that half the country is keenly aware that they are routinely mocked and looked down on by much of the media. The disdain shown by too many reporters for too many Americans is a major reason our nation is polarized and divided.
Today’s mainstream media is dominated by college-educated Democratic voters who write stories for other college-educated Democrats. These journalists haven’t just slanted the media; they take sides in our debates and are too often activists for a cause. There is no secret meeting where liberals decide how to slant the news. There is no central source of propaganda. It’s worse than that. It comes naturally to the media because they’re too much alike—they have a diversity problem.
It’s time the press faced up to why so few people trust them and why they’ve been losing viewers and readers for decades. Suppression, Deception, Snobbery, and Bias is the reckoning they will never do on their own.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is very well researched and includes an extensive bibliography citing sources. Fleischer gives numerous examples of similar situations that were treated very differently by the media depending on the political party of both Democrats and Republicans who were unquestionably at fault. Fleischer describes a news story where a Republican and a Democrat were involved in the same wrongdoing and includes photographs of the headlines showing how the story was covered in both instances. I’m sure this would be an eye opener for many but unfortunately the people who really should read this probably won’t. I’ve said for many years that I can read any headline and tell you without looking at the source whether it’s a left wing or right wing outlet and very often I can accurately guess the name of the outlet too. Many years ago when I was in school, I was taught that opinion is on the editorial page of the newspaper and the factual news was covered in the news stories. That is no longer the case, if it ever was. Every single article is laced with opinion whether it’s on the opinion page or in what is considered straight news.
Many years ago when there were only three major networks, CBS, NBC and ABC, the viewing audience was diverse and it included Independents, Republicans and Democrats. While journalism majors are overwhelmingly Democrat and liberal and probably were then as well, networks were very careful to find a middle ground so as not to alienate a significant part of their audience. It was a time when Walter Cronkite was voted the most trusted man in America.
I used to watch CNN all the time. In the past, the network had both liberal and conservative talking heads. I loved “Crossfire” and “Equal Time” where conservatives and liberals would make their case and the viewer could decide which argument(s) made more sense. James Carville, Paul Begala, Tom Braden, Geraldine Ferraro and others would argue for Democrats. Pat Buchanan, Newt Gingrich, Robert Novak, Tucker Carlson and others would argue for Republicans. Usually both sides made some good points as well as presented some rather weak arguments. Now the media model is to target a particular demographic audience and give them what they want to hear so they keep tuning in. CNN targets Democrats and their audience is overwhelmingly liberal. Fox News is conservative and their audience tends to be overwhelmingly Republican. So CNN gives their audience the liberal spin they want and leaves out anything that doesn’t fit the narrative. Fox News gives their audience the conservative spin. The result is that media outlets make lots of money catering to people who tune in by giving them exactly what they want to hear and leave out whatever doesn’t appeal to their target audience
Those on the left sometimes argue that the media they watch is not biased (it’s only the media on the right – wink wink) and that of course mistakes are made but they are rare. They obviously have no idea what is really happening. There certainly are accidental mistakes in all types of media because of a rush to be the first with “breaking news.” There are mistakes because anonymous sources are used and not fact checked first because the story is just too good and it fits the network narrative. If it turns out the anonymous sources were wrong, the media outlet spends very little or sometimes no time correcting the error and moves on. Few will hear the correction and the damage has been done. And there are mistakes of omission where there is a two-minute piece on a particular news story and something that is relevant but doesn’t support the accepted narrative is deliberately left out.
Every single news outlet, print or television has a bias without exception. The problem is that too many people think that the source of their news is an unbiased source and they only follow sources that tell them what they want to hear.
As a result, the media significantly contributes to the polarization of the electorate rather than serving as an objective fourth pillar of democracy as it was intended to be. This is not good for any of us or for our country.
Excellent read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAri Fleischer, gives you one of the best tours that shows how "modern" mainstream media work (or should I say how news are being cooked?). Some people may scoff at the fact that Fleischer is Fox News contributor and Republican and hence whatever he says is not worth listening to. Well , this is exactly the main point of his book. This particular bias where "deplorable-free"part of society always knows better and always has the best and only true information is at the root of problems with mainstream media.
Fleischer uses publicly available material. There are no conspiracy theories in this book instead you will find countless quotes, headlines, news, spins etc coming from New York Times, CNN, MSNBS and if you have IQ > 20 there is no way you will disagree with Fleischer on how biased and wrong those media are. Really. I will give you an example from the book: Once NYT was covering Trump's speech and to report the content of the speech they headlined the story "Trump urges Unity vs Racism" mainly because this is what Trump said in his speech. Well, after countless protests from NYT editors, readers cancelling subscription, Dean Baquet NYT executive editor caved in and the headline was changed to "Assailing Hate But not Guns".
This is just one of the example I randomly picked from very rich portfolio of very interesting other examples. Some are comical (exposing ignorance of young journalists), some are serious but none are boring and literally every page forces you to reflect on the true meaning of what contemporary news is.
As I mentioned, all material is publicly available (unless authors e.g. deleted their original tweets - in this case screenshots of original tweets are shown), verifiable and waiting for you to be re-discovered with Fleischer's help.
One thing is certain there is no way you will get bored reading it. It is a page-turner, eloquently written and one of the best books of the year
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAri Fleisher does a great job of exposing the liberal bias of the media. He has every lie and deceptive example footnoted. The media lies and decieves so much that I had forgotten most of the examples he provides. I don't see how anyone could defend the mainstream media after reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor several years, I have been complaining to some of my relatives and friends, that they are only getting part of the truth from the media. The problem is that they are unaware of the truth...I stopped listening to the majority of main stream media over a year ago. I have better luck reading El Diario from Madrid for facts on the US rather than the newspapers in the US.
Such a sad state of affairs in our country when our press is so controlled. It is as if the US is a third world country and not one of a 'free press'. I shudder to think of the road that America is traveling on now.
The author presents the facts in his book with a clear and concise manner. As the title suggests, he covers the suppression of facts, the deception, the bias as well as snobbery.
This should be a 'must read' for every citizen in the US...no matter what political affiliation they are...For those wondering, I never vote either Democrat or Republican. I look at the candidates and their past records and then choose one on accordingly. Over my 50 + years of voting, it is about an even split between Liberals and Conservatives.
Everyone will learn something in this book. Read it and for some, it will be a real 'eye opener'. If only the ones who need to read it to learn the truth would; if only......
Most highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indisputable analysis
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMany leftwing apologists could have dismissed Fleischer's analysis, even his first hand accounts, but surely even they must accept his well resourced observations as of April/May 2025 with a plethora of leftwing media writing books claiming they were duped. Either they were completely inept and unprofessional, or complicit in the suppression of Bidens easily identified dementia. Either way it's a downward spiral for mainstream media.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pulls No Punhces
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA blunt, fact-filled book on the sick, twisted liberal media that's become pure propaganda for the left and has done such enormous damage to the entire West by turning people into idiots.
Heavy reading but well worth it.
It leaves no doubt as to why we are in such rapid decline.
