Nurse ‘raped, murdered’ while heading home from Uttarakhand hospital, one arrested
She was reported missing on July 31 after not coming home the previous night. On August 8, her body was found at an empty plot in her village in Uttar Pradesh.

(Representational image/File)A week after the body of a nurse working at a private hospital in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district was found from her village in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district, a daily wage labourer was arrested on Wednesday.
According to police, the accused, identified as Dharmendra Kumar from Bareilly, allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered the woman after intercepting her while she was going home alone after duty at the hospital on July 30.
The next day, on July 31, the nurse’s sister filed a missing person report as she did not come home.
A week later, her body was found at an empty plot.
Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent Of Police Manjunath T C said, “On July 30, we received a missing person report… When we searched for her, we got to know that she had reached all the way to her village (before being attacked) in Uttar Pradesh. On August 8, we were informed about the body of a woman having been recovered from bushes in that area. It was soon confirmed that it was the body of the missing woman.”
Police said that during the investigation, they found the woman’s phone in Rajasthan. Using technical and CCTV evidence that showed the accused following the woman, police identified him as Dharmendra Kumar, a Bareilly resident who sometimes worked as a daily wage labourer at the town in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar where the hospital the woman worked in is located. He was arrested from Rajasthan.
“The accused is a (drug) addict and does not know the woman. On the day of the incident, he saw the woman going alone. As per our information, he stopped the woman, who fought back fiercely. She was, however, overpowered and… strangled her to death. He also sexually assaulted her. After the murder, he took the woman’s belongings and escaped,” said the SSP.
Officers said the accused has confessed to the crime. Police have also recovered the clothes he was wearing at the time of the incident, as well his mobile phone and SIM card.
