FORT NOVOSEL, Ala. (WTVY) - UPDATE: The instructor pilot that died in a Fort Novosel helicopter crash on Wednesday afternoon has been identified by Dale County Coroner John Cawley.

Daniel Munger, 46, of Enterprise was pronounced deceased onsite. He served as a contracted flight instructor and was a retired Army CW3 officer.

The wreck also injured a U.S. Army student pilot who was airlifted for further medical evaluation.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

UPDATE: An AH-64 Apache helicopter suffered a “mishap” during routine flight training on Fort Novosel, according to a press release Wednesday from the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel Public Affairs Office.

The helicopter had two crewmembers on board.

One crewmember, a U.S. Army student pilot, sustained minor injuries and was airlifted via an Army MEDEVAC helicopter for further medical evaluation.

“The instructor pilot, a contractor, was medically evaluated onsite and is deceased,” the release said.

“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” said Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general.

The release said the mishap is under investigation.

ORIGINAL: A helicopter crash at Fort Novosel has claimed at one life, Dale County Coroner John Cawley confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

“I can confirm I was asked to respond to a helicopter crash at the base,” Cawley said. The crash site, per a source, is near Lake Tholocco.

He could not immediately provide additional information.

A Fort Novosel spokesperson had no immediate comment.
