A Slidell man was shot on Monday after he was accused of attacking a Mandeville homeowner. According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the 1200 block of Dove Park Road when a shooting was reported. When deputies arrived, they found Careyunius Smith shot in the abdomen. Smith was taken to an area hospital where he is considered stable. The sheriff's office said investigators learned that Smith was near the garage of a home in Mandeville when the homeowner approached him, asking why he was on the property. Smith is accused of attacking the homeowner. The homeowner called for another person inside the home to help. Deputies say Smith did not stop attacking the homeowner, so the other person inside the home went inside and got a gun. According to the sheriff's office, the person begged for Smith to stop. Both homeowners called 911. According to the sheriff, the homeowners were determined to be acting in self-defense at the time of the shooting. Smith is facing charges of criminal trespassing, attempted simple kidnapping, simple battery, and simple assault. Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility.
