Dave, I'd like to hear you and other Christians explain how we can be a Christian Nation (which IS what the U.S. was and should be--as was recognized by our SCOTUS at the beginning (it's in at least 1 SCOTUS opinion, as I recall)) but tolerate atheists (perhaps in governance?), hindus, budhists, muslims, etc. I expect Islam and Hinduism would actually be limited because the head tax for non-muslims would be unconstitutional & the (Hindu?/East Indian) burning widows would also be. But how can we return to the religious & philosophical roots without properly alarming those who are NOT Christians. I myself am an evangelical Christian attorney (Washington State 1990 license & Western (Federal) District of Washington), member of Gideons Int, living within the evangelical and scriptural inerrancy protestant tradition. While I think the "Christian Nationalism" scare is a canard, I completely sympathize with non-Christians who might be alarmed. Jesus is Lord, but He is not Allah. It is not part of Christian life that we must "submit", even though we are bondservants of Christ; nevertheless it is also true that we must trust and obey to be HAPPY in Jesus, who came for us to have ABUNDANT life. While I am not necessarily anti-Calvinist, I think it is best to fully employ the rhetoric of freedom of speech, association, belief, excercise, publication, etc., and the choice to accept God's gift of salvation through Jesus Christ as opposed to the "election" of "the ELECT". So, in short, what is our Christian theology of governance by the unsaved? Furthermore, or perhaps in the same vein, how do we speak, for example, of the 1770s rebellion/revolution? I read Charles Finney's biography, but don't recall him talking about this. I took a B.A. in history & philosphy ('84), beginning at Trinity Western Univ. & finishing at Univ. of Washington, but I still have these questions.
