DISTURBING. YEAH. RICK. JENNIFER. THESE DETAILS ARE INDEED DISTURBING. IN FACT, THIS IS THE APARTMENT COMPLEX, RIGHT BEHIND ME WHERE ALL OF THIS HAPPENED. THE CORONER IS STILL TRYING TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THIS BABY’S DEATH, BUT WE DID SPEAK WITH A LOCAL NONPROFIT WHOSE MISSION IS TO WORK WITH NEW AND EXPECTING MOTHERS TO HOPEFULLY PREVENT TRAGIC CASES LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING. WHAT HAPPENED IS SHE HAD JUST REACHED OUT AND SAY, HEY, I NEED HELP. WHAT ARE THE RESOURCES HERE IN THE COMMUNITY? PROGRAM DIRECTOR TITANIA CLEMONS WORKS TO HELP PREGNANT WOMEN WHO FEEL THEY HAVE NO OR LIMITED OPTIONS, SO IT WAS HARD TO HEAR THE DETAILS OF THIS CASE. LMPD DETECTIVES WERE CALLED TO THE NORTH APARTMENTS ON ZORN AVENUE SATURDAY AFTER A REPORT OF A BABY BEING HIDDEN IN A CLOSET. POLICE SAY DARA MEJIA AGUILAR ADMITTED SHE’D GIVEN BIRTH EARLIER IN THE WEEK AND WRAPPED THE NEWBORN IN A BLANKET, PUT IT IN A TRASH BAG AND THEN IN HER CLOSET BEFORE EVENTUALLY MOVING THE BABY TO THE TRUNK OF HER CAR, CLEMONS SAYS. CATHOLIC CHARITIES AIMS TO SUPPORT NEW AND EXPECTING MOTHERS WITH EDUCATION, RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY SO THEY DON’T FEEL ISOLATED. SOME OF THE MOMS MAY NOT HAVE SUPPORT, AND THEY MIGHT GET SUPPORT FROM ALL THE OTHER MOMS THAT MIGHT BE IN THE PROGRAM. SO IT’S JUST LIKE A SUPPORT GROUP FOR MOMS. THE SUPPORT ALSO EXTENDS TO DEALING WITH THE DEATH OF A BABY, SOMETHING AFTER THE DEATH OF HER BABY POSTPARTUM. THAT CAN REALLY, YOU KNOW, AFFECT MOMS. CLEMONS ALSO SAYS SOME WOMEN NEED TO KNOW THEY HAVE OPTIONS LIKE SAFE HAVEN BABY BOXES. IF THEY DON’T FEEL MOTHERHOOD IS RIGHT FOR THEM, THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY WANT TO DO WITH THEIR BABY. THEY DON’T KNOW, YOU KNOW, IF THAT’S BEING A MOTHER IS, YOU KNOW, RIGHT. FOR THEM. AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE THOSE CHOICES. CLEMONS SAYS THAT SUPPORT IS CRITICAL TO GIVE MOTHERS AND THEIR BABIES THE BEST CHANCE AT POSITIVE OUTCOMES IN LIFE. WE DEFINITELY HAVE TO BEAR IN MIND YOU KNOW, KEEPING THE DIGNITY OF, YOU KNOW, MOMS AND EVEN BABIES AS WELL, BECAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT MOMS ARE GOING THROUGH. CATHOLIC CHARITIES ALSO TELLS US ANYONE NEEDING THEIR SUPPORT CAN REACH OUT OR DROP IN AT ANY TIME. THEY WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY AGAIN. THE CORONER IS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHETHER THIS BABY WAS STILLBORN, WHETHER THIS BABY DIED AT BIRTH OR DIED AFTER BIRTH, AND AT THE SAME TIME, LMPD SAYS THIS APPEARED TO BE A FULL TERM NEWBORN. BUT NO GENDER HAS BEEN GIVEN REPORTING LIVE ON CLEVELAND BOULEVARD.
