Editorial Reviews
Review
Designers Braas and Hetty-Burkart (35+ Potholders to Crochet) cover classic stitches and newly-created patterns in this encyclopedic guide. The authors organize the work into 11 sections based on stitch-type, and their step-by-step instructions cover basic stitches, shells and fans, spike stitches, and mesh patterns, among others. Standout designs include “Staggered Paws,” a botanical-looking stitch; “Spike Stitch Double Crochet Vs,” with pretty swirls and pointy barbs; and “Two-Color Teardrops,” an open design perfect for a throw or blanket. There are edgings galore to choose from, and the Granny Square section is a boon to anyone who loves experimenting with different versions of this crochet staple. A helpful glossary divides patterns by type and level of difficulty, and patterns are both written out and charted, making it easy for readers to choose which way they prefer to conquer each project. Crocheters new and experienced alike would do well to have this on the shelf.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2025Wonderful book, well written and in great condition. Thank you very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2025This is my favorite crochet stitch book. It took me a bit to learn how to read the stitch chart but once I understood how to read the charts, I found them easier to follow than other books that show photos of hooks and yarn. It includes stitches for a variety of projects from ripple blankets to clothing and accessories. I appreciate that it includes instructions for granny squares and borders as well as basic stitches and open work designs. A must have for those who like to design their own blankets, sweaters and accessories.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2025If you are a crocheter you need this. This comes with all the basic stitches and is a crochet stitch dictionary for patterns. Great gift from my husband.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025I want to give this 5 stars but I can’t. The instructions are in diagrams only and not always clear. The pictures are labeled as rows 1, 2, etc. but they’re not clear on which side it should be going. While I appreciate the chart key to remind you of what each stitch is and how to do it, the instructions on the individual stitches reminds me of someone who has never taught crochet before. There is also a weird section in the “edging and border” section. There are some very pretty edges shown but there’s nothing to say how to turn corners. If it doesn’t have a corner, what is the purpose? I highly recommend practicing the stitches.
I’m an intermediate crocheter, I don’t recommend this book for beginners.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025So many beautiful patterns -- they made me fall in love wirh crocheting all over again. The designs are charted, but there are written directions for special stitches in the patterns. The designs range from easier to complex, some are multicolored, and all are accompanied by lovely clear photos. Definitely a book worth adding to a crafter's library.
