Cold weather shelters open as western NC faces cold temps during Helene recovery
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - As western North Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, residents will also face extremely low temperatures this week.
FOX Carolina’s First Alert weather team declared Wednesday a First Alert Weather Day in the mountains due to temperatures in the mid-30s. Not only will temperatures be not far from freezing in the mountains, with breezy conditions expected it could feel even colder - wind chill values potentially in the upper 20s to low 30s. This brings concern for those in this area, especially those still without power.
Here’s a list of cold weather shelters in Buncombe County:
- A-B Tech Conference Center located at 16 Fernihurst Drive in Asheville.
- Former Gold’s Gym located at 1815 Hendersonville Road in Asheville.
- Medical Emergency Center located at 10 Genevieve Circle in Asheville.
- Western North Carolina AG Center located at 1301 Fanning Bridge Road in Fletcher. (Allows pets)
Community Care Stations have also been set up in two locations in Asheville and will be open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily, offering hot showers, laundry, wi-fi, porta-johns, charging stations, water and meals. All amenities are free to the public.
The locations are 980 Brevard Road in the At Home Store parking lot and 85 Tunnel Road in the Innsbruck shopping center parking lot.
Eblen Charities is also providing gasoline vouchers, warm winter clothes and other essentials Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day.
