Car buyers from the baby boomer generation are more likely to know what they want up front, more likely to have more than 25% of the cost saved up, and to more likely to drive away in an American car than other generations, recent studies said.
A report released earlier this month by Insurify lists American brands as the most popular choice for boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) in 38 U.S. states, led by Ford (20 states) and Chevrolet (18 states). Toyota was third with 10 states, followed by Nissan with two. Ford is the most popular brand overall with 13% ownership among boomers.
Baby boomers are also most likely to know the car they want at the beginning of the shopping process, according to a study released earlier this year by Cox Automotive. Cox reported that 38% of baby boomers knew what they wanted at the outset, compared to 28% of Gen Xers, 26% of millennials and 24% of Generation Z. Only 54% of baby boomers considered both new and used vehicles, compared to 79% for Gen Z, 76% for millennials and 72% for Gen X.
“In terms of saving for a purchase, boomers are more likely than other generations to save money for more than 25% of their vehicle’s final price,” added Jenni Newman, editor-in-chief of Cars.com. “Gen X is more likely than other generations to save for less than 10% of their vehicle’s final price.”
