BUT FOR HOW LONG. KRISTIN: AND THE BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING RUSH, WITH THOUSANDS OF KIDS RETURNING TO THE CLASSRM TOMORROW. [CAPTIONING MADE POSSIBLE BY WISN-TV] [CAPTIONING [CAPTIONING PERFORMED BY THE NATIONAL CAPTION DIANA: WE BEGIN WITH BRE NEWS, A CRASH IN MILWAUKEE INVOLVING THE MOTORCADE OF DEMOCRATIC VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TIM WALZ. KRISTIN: WALZ WAS IN MILWAUKEE SPEAKING AT LABORFEST, A SUMMERFEST GROUNDS. ON HIS WAY TO THE LAKEFRONT FROM THE AIRPORT, THREE VEH HIS MOTORCADE WERE INVOLVED IN A CRASH ON I-794. WALZ HIMSELF WAS NOT IN THE CRASH. ONE OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WAS A PRESS VAN WITH LOCA REPORTERS, INCLUDING 12 NEWS POLITICAL DIRECTOR MATT SMITH AND PHOTOGRAPHER BOB PALMER. ANCHOR: HERE’S A MAP OF WHERE THE CRASH HAPPENED. IT WAS ON 794 BETWEEN LAYTON AND HOWARD AVENUES. DIANA: WE HAVE TEAM COVERAGE OF WALZ’S VISIT. WE BEGIN WITH MATT, LIVE FROM THE AIRPORT. MATT, NEITHER YOU NOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER WERE HURT. BUT SOME PEOPLE SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. MATT: WE ARE OK, AND THANK YOU FOR THAT. IT GOVERNOR WALZ TOOK OFF FROM THE AIRPORT IN THE LAST 15 MINUTES OR SO AFTER THE CREW -- AFTER THE CHAOTIC START OF THE MOTORCADE. TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO WE CAPTURED IN THE AFTERMATH OF THIS CRASH. WE WERE JUST COMING OFF THE LAYTON EXIT, HEADED TOWARD THE SUMMERFEST GROUNDS, WHEN THIS ALL HAPPENED. THREE VANS INVOLVED, ESSENTIALLY A TRAIN REACTION CRASH -- CHAIN REACTION CRASH, A STAFF VAN AND TWO PRESS VANS. ONE MEMBER OF THE CAMPAIGN STAFF WAS BROUGHT TO FREIGHTER WITH A BROKEN ARM. OTHERS REPORTED MINOR INJURIES ON SCENE. PARAMEDICS ARRIVING. LOCAL, STATE, AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS NOW INVESTIGATING. THE FRONT END OF THE MOTORCADE, INCLUDING GOVERNOR WALZ AND HIS WIFE, WERE NOT IMPACTED BY THE CRASH. THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SUMMERFEST GROUNDS AHEAD OF US, AND GOVERNOR WALZ ADDRESSED THIS AT THE TOP OF HIS SPEECH. TAKE A LISTEN. GOV. WALZ: SOME OF THE MEMBERS OF THE PRESS THAT WERE TRAVELING N A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. WE’ SPOKEN WITH THE STAFF. I’M RELIEVED TO SAY THAT WITH A FEW MINOR INJURIES, EVERYBODY IS GOING TO BE OK. [APPLAUSE] PRESIDENT BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS CALLED TO CHECK IN, AND WE CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THEIR CONCERN. I WANT TO EXPRESS MY SYMPATHY -- MY SINCERE THANKS TO THE U.S. SECRET SERVICE AND ALL THE FIRST RESPONDERS FOR THEIR QUICK REACTION. MATT: THIS IS NEW VIDEO JUST IN. THE MOTORCADE OF GOVERNOR WALZ MAKING AN UNANNOUNCED STOP TO FROEDTERT HOSPITAL. GOVERNOR WALZ GOING OUT TO CHECK -- GOING INTO CHECK ON THAT CAMPAIGN STAFFER WITH THE BROKEN ARM. THE MOTORCADE HAS DEPARTED. DIANA: PART OF THE INVESTIGATION WILL LIKELY FOCUS ON TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE FOR THAT CRASH. MATT: IT WILL, BECAUSE AS WE WERE ENTERING 794, THE FREEWAY WAS NOT SHUT DOWN. WE SAW VEHICLES PASSING ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE IN THE LEFT-HAND LANES, AND WE BELIEVE THAT AT LEAST CONTRIBUTED TO WHAT CAUSED THIS CHAIN REACTION CRASH. ONE VEHICLE, A PEDESTRIAN VEHICLE, NOT INVOLVED IN THE MOTORCADE WAS INVOLVED. WE HAVE ASKED BOTH THE MILWAUKEE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE AND SECRET SERVICE AT THIS HOUR IF A FREEWAY CLOSURE WAS REQUESTED. WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED A DEFINITIVE ANSWER FROM EITHER AGENCY AT THIS POINT. WHEN I CAN TELL YOU IS ON THE WAY BACK TO THE HOSPITAL AND HERE TO THE AIRPORT, EVERY FREEWAY WAS SHUT DOWN.
