Reagan Reviews

The film seems incapable of imagining what its protagonist was like in private moments or ascribing any interior complexity to him.

Colorful, stiff biopic starring an over-the-top Dennis Quaid. [Full review in Spanish]

Ultimately, Reagan is an insubstantive Greatest Hits compendium LP existing to spin, spin, spin positive, no matter what.

Jumping timelines and hitting rom a Russian POV make this eccentric biopic hard to follow. However, it does highlight beautifully crafted performances from Dennis Quaid and Penelope Ann Miller

Full Review | Oct 4, 2024

This by-the-numbers biopic is a soggy, second-rate attempt at myth-making that cares more about legacy than about who the man behind the legend really was.

A piecemeal approach is hardly the way to approach a politician who shifted the direction of his party. There’s a lot to unearth here but “Reagan” doesn’t want to be groundbreaking. It settles for stirring a little soil, not moving a lot of dirt.

Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 26, 2024

Reagan captures a bygone era of dignity, class, and conviction in political leadership that feels refreshing.

Full Review | Sep 23, 2024

Reagan harps on the phrase “clarity is power,” and it is clarity as a visual storytelling value more than patriotism or reason that makes this film into the most effective kind of propaganda.

This is not an exploration, but a celebration, and for that reason it's undramatic.

Fans of Reagan will like it…fans of history, not so much.

Though its years spent in development hell likely preclude the possibility, it has the artificial sheen of generative AI, as if someone fed “reverent biopic of Ronald Reagan” into an algorithm.

Full Review | Sep 11, 2024

It will likely be cherished by those who care less about film than they do about Reagan.

Full Review | Original Score: C- | Sep 11, 2024

Reagan can’t even trace the broad outlines of your stock biopic, because it refuses to allow in its protagonist any kind of complicating flaw, and the geopolitical stalemate that acts as the primary conflict is too big and abstract for the frame.

On the other hand, those with admiration in their heart for Reagan will be able to look past all the problems. They will only see a story that reminds them of how a Hollywood actor rose to become the most powerful person on the planet.

Those who are looking for a film about Reagan the man will not find much of that here. Instead they get a full view of Reagan the politician.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/10 | Sep 7, 2024

The new biopic leans into this nostalgia with ahistorical bravado and selective story-telling. If you are looking for a more thought-provoking cinematic dive into a critical part of history, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Full Review | Original Score: D | Sep 6, 2024

Like Reagan the actor and Reagan the president, Reagan the new movie has a strained relationship with reality.

Full Review | Sep 6, 2024

It’s a bio-pic of Ronald Reagan from the director of “Baby Geniuses and the Mystery of the Crown Jewels,” “Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite,” and “Bratz.”

Full Review | Original Score: D | Sep 4, 2024

As a film, Reagan is about as perfect a biopic as you will get.

Full Review | Original Score: 8.5/10 | Sep 3, 2024

Without any lifelike characters, it’s hard to find oneself caring, and thus, Reagan’s dedication to such narrow themes proves limiting.
