Growing up, Kamala Harris writes in her memoir The Truths We Hold, "We weren’t rich in financial terms, but the values we internalized provided a different kind of wealth."

However, as a working adult, Harris's decades working in government, and her marriage to lawyer Doug Emhoff, has made her a millionaire. When Harris first ran for president in 2020, she released 15 years of her personal tax returns, offering viewers insight into her finances and her net worth.

On the eve of Election Day, take a look inside Kamala Harris's net worth, which Forbes now estimates is around $8 million:

Harris's salary working in government

After graduating law school, she worked in the Alameda County district attorney's office, before joining the San Francisco district attorney's office and was elected the SF District Attorney in 2003. So, Harris's salary has been publicly available since then:

  • As a DA from 2003 to 2010, she initially made around $140,000 a year. By the time she left office in 2010, she was making around $200,000 a year.
  • In 2010, she became California's Attorney General, and her salary dropped to $149,000 a year.
  • In 2016, she was elected Senator, and started earning $174,000 a year.
  • Harris currently earns $218,000 per year as Vice President of the United States.

Holding local and state office in California earned her two pensions; Forbes estimates their worth to be just under $1 million today. When Harris was sworn in as a Senator, she had, per Forbes, between $250,000 and $500,000 in a savings account and "a similar amount of investments in retirement accounts, plus her pensions."

Her marriage to Doug Emhoff

The bulk of Harris's net worth, however, comes from her marriage to Doug Emhoff, who earned around $1 million a year working as an entertainment lawyer. Since Harris and Emhoff began filing joint taxes, the couple has reported over $1 million in income per year. However, once Harris assumed the Vice Presidency, Emhoff left his job and joined Georgetown University's law school as a member of faculty, and his income has dropped to around $200,000 per year.

Harris and Emhoff's Los Angeles home

Harris and Emhoff own a home in Brentwood, California that Emhoff purchased in 2012. The estimated market value on the home, per Zillow, is around $5 million. (Forbes estimates it around $4.4 million.) When Harris became Vie President, she sold her San Francisco apartment and D.C. apartment.
