From the Back Cover
Culture is doing its best to convince the world there is nothing special about Jesus. And many Christians never get beyond a Sunday school understanding of their own faith. As a result, Christianity's most important historical fact--the resurrection--is often the most misunderstood, relegated to Easter and funeral services, creating a powerless Christianity.
In Body of Proof, acclaimed apologist and scholar Dr. Jeremiah Johnston sets out to show why Jesus' victory over death is central to a believer's faith. Straightforward, accessible, and practical, this book examines the latest archaeological and textual findings and presents seven tangible, fresh reasons to believe Jesus really rose from the dead--and why it matters today as the foundation of our hope in the face of suffering and grief. When you fully understand the implications of the resurrection, you will begin to understand the power of Christ in you. This changes everything.
"A creative masterpiece of persuasive evidence for the pivotal event of human history."--LEE STROBEL, New York Times bestselling author and founding director of the Lee Strobel Center at Colorado Christian University
"Body of Proof is a book every pastor should teach and every believer should read."--DR. JACK GRAHAM, senior pastor, Prestonwood Baptist Church

About the author

Hi, I am Jeremiah, and I am honored to have you stop by my author central page. I live at the intersection of the scholarly and popular worlds; therefore, I have a passion for teaching and inspiring people like you to own your faith and to engage confidently with the world around you.
Dr. Jeremiah J. Johnston is a New Testament scholar, professor, apologist, and regular speaker on university campuses, churches, and conferences. His passion is equipping Christians to give intellectually informed accounts of what they believe. Dr. Johnston completed his doctoral residency in Oxford in partnership with Oxford Centre for Mission Studies and received his Ph.D. from Middlesex University (United Kingdom), with commendation. He has Masters Degrees from Acadia University (Canada) and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (US). He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Johnston serves as the founder and president of Christian Thinkers Society, a resident institute at Houston Baptist University, where he also serves as associate professor of Early Christianity. Christian Thinkers Society produces live events, media productions, conferences, and publications to teach pastors and Christians to become thinkers, and thinkers to become Christians.
In addition to his popular publications, Dr. Johnston has distinguished himself with publications in scholarly, refereed journals and serials. These include entries in Oxford University Press and E. J. Brill reference works. He specializes in Christian origins, Jesus and the Gospels, and topics, especially apologetics, that closely relate to Jesus and the Gospels. These include: the resurrection of Jesus, New Testament manuscripts (their number, nature, and reliability), extra-canonical gospels, resurrection, and afterlife beliefs. He has presented academic papers at learned meetings and has examined ancient texts (papyri, codices, and the like) at renowned libraries, such as the Griffith Papyrology Room of Oxford University's Bodleian Library and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University. Dr. Johnston co-edits an academic series for Bloomsbury T&T Clark and is currently preparing a volume on Jesus in Cambridge University Press's distinguished "In Context" series.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe Shroud of Turin has been a fascinating subject when it first surfaced years ago and scientists clamored to test it.
This book is an amazing journey with the most compelling arguments and proof offered in establishing the authenticity of the shroud. I am convinced science, history, and the Bible, all come together on this shroud, pointing to no one else but Christ Jesus, as artfully discussed in this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI have the paperback. I am a believer so you can use that to measure my review. I'll first direct to page 29 of the book where the author describes the viva voce (oral defense) of his 93,000 word dissertation. Professor William Telford started the viva by asking the author if he believed that Jesus physically rose from the dead. The author said he did and Professor Telford said he didn't. As the author notes, there are no "do overs" for a doctoral defense at Oxford so the author's personal stakes were very high. Three hours or so later (page 31) Professor Telford and the committee passed the author with commendation.
The book reads well. It starts with the arguments against the resurrection. If you are interested, I have read two books, The Passover Plot, and Why the Jews Rejected Jesus, that go into more detail if you want further detail on the arguments against those put forward by Dr. Johnston in this book.
Next, the book follows with a chapter entitled "the Resurrection Bears a Heavy Burden of Proof." Here, the author looks at Judeo-Christian ideas of resurrection including the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel and passages in Isaiah and Daniel. The differing views of the major Jewish groups of Pharisees and Sadducees on an afterlife are noted.
Then the book goes to Part 3 with an exposition on what the author feels are the 7 best reasons to believe in the physical resurrection. You can form your own opinion on each reason. One aspect of the argument with which I was not familiar was the attacks on early Christianity by Celsus and Porphyry in the 2nd and 3rd centuries for various reasons including that much of Christianity was adopted by the lower classes and not by the leading classes in the Roman Empire.
The book ends with Part 4, an assessment of other evidence. Chapter 11 looks at the issue of where the actual burial place is located. Jewish burial practices in the 1st century are outlined. Chapter 12 looks at how the resurrection was received by Romans in the 1st - 3rd centuries who, according to the author, were offended by the resurrection. The author posits that the extra-canonical books of The Gospel of Peter and the Acts of Pilate may have been written as a response to writings of Celsus and Porphyry in an effort to counter some of their objections. This argument was new to me.
If the subject interests you, I recommend the book highly.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is an excellent book. It is well-researched and well-written. I like the fact that the author presented the facts of Jesus' resurrection after providing information as to why detractors would not believe in the resurrection. I have shared this with several people, both Christians and non-Christians.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWonderful and stimulating study. Easy to understand and share

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful insight into the Resurrection
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book contained strong supporting evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. I learned much from the content about the events surrounding the crucifixion of Christ. It is written in straightforward language.
