BREAKING NEWS. THAT BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE CONTINUES FROM SHAWNEE, THE SHAWNEE MISSION NORTHWEST COMMUNITY IS GRIEVING THE LOSS OF A STUDENT WHO DIED FROM A MEDICAL ISSUE. GOOD EVENING. I’M LARA MORITZ AND I’M BRYA BERRY. A 15 YEAR OLD FOOTBALL PLAYER WAS RUSHED FROM CAMPUS DURING CONDITIONING EXERCISES ON WEDNESDAY. HE DIED TODAY. KMBC NINE’S BRIAN JOHNSON IS LIVE WITH HOW STUDENTS AND STAFF MEMBERS ARE SUPPORTING EACH OTHER THROUGH THIS TIME. YEAH, BRIAN. WELL, THIS IS JUST OVERWHELMING FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF YVETTE GOMEZ REGALADO. TONIGHT, SOME OF THOSE TEAMMATES ARE GATHERING TOGETHER SO THAT THEY AREN’T ALONE WITH THEIR GRIEF. TOMORROW, I’M TOLD THEY WILL COME TO THIS FIELD TO DO A BALLOON RELEASE IN HONOR ALWAYS TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER. IT WAS 15 YEAR OLD YVETTE GOMEZ REGALADO, FIRST DAY BACK TO CLASS AT SHAWNEE MISSION NORTHWEST. YVETTE WAS CONDITIONING IN PREPARATION FOR THE START OF FOOTBALL WHEN HE HAD A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. PARAMEDICS RUSHED HIM TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL, BUT FRIDAY HE DIED FROM HIS INJURIES. WE LIKE TO PUT A TIMELINE ON GRIEF LIKE I SHOULD BE SAD FOR THIS LONG AND THEN I SHOULD BE OKAY AND THAT’S JUST THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS. MICHAEL SHEEHAN IS A THERAPIST IN KANSAS CITY. HE SAYS DURING DIFFICULT TIMES LIKE THIS, PARENTS SHOULD JUST BE PRESENT. WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT FOR OUR KIDS, ESPECIALLY, IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THEM, TO BE WITH THEM IN THEIR DISCOMFORT AND IN THEIR GRIEF, AND THAT IT’S OKAY TO FEEL THAT WAY. HE SAYS, MAKE A SAFE SPACE FOR YOUR CHILD TO FEEL WHATEVER THEY FEEL FOR AS LONG AS THE FEELINGS COME. THAT’S THAT’S HOW WE PROCESS THINGS THROUGH NIGHTMARES AND THROUGH THINKING ABOUT IT AND THROUGH WORRYING ABOUT IT AND COMPARING OURSELVES AND LIKE, THAT’S THAT’S NORMAL. THAT’S JUST HOW WE’RE TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OF SOMETHING THAT IS HARD TO MAKE SENSE OF. PRINCIPAL LISA GRUMAN KNOWS HEALING WILL TAKE TIME. SHE SENT A LETTER TO FAMILIES DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPENED, ADDING THAT YVETTE WAS SUCH A WARM AND WONDERFUL STUDENT THAT TOUCHED THE HEARTS OF SO MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY AND THE DISTRICT HAD COUNSELORS IN CLASS ON CAMPUS TODAY. THEY WILL BE BACK AGAIN ON MONDAY, AS WILL SOCIAL WORKERS AS WELL. LIVE IN SHAWNEE. BRIAN JOHNSON, KMBC NINE NEWS BRIAN, THANKS. THIS IS THE THIRD

A football player from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School died following a medical emergency that occurred after off-season conditioning on Wednesday. The student passed away on Friday. A letter emailed out to students and families on Friday identified the student as Ovet Gomez Regalado. "Death is always difficult to handle, but particularly so when someone so young dies," principal Dr. Lisa Gruman wrote in the letter. "It will be important to recognize that all of us will need time to process what has happened, and to express our feelings. Your child may struggle to make sense of this death. Please encourage your child to express their feelings, and be there to talk with them about what has happened."The Shawnee Mission Northwest Football Booster Club issued this statement: "Our football family has suffered the tragic loss of one our own. We were informed this morning of the passing of Ovet Gomez Regalado. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, teammates, and coaches. We know many of you will want to find a way to support the family and honor his memory. We will work with the school district to support their efforts and share with you any opportunities that arise."Counselors were available at the school on Friday and will also be there on Monday for support. Regular football practice is set to begin on Monday.
