Quarterly Uniform Crime Percent Change Reports By Offense
The FBI collects crime data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.
All agencies reporting data to the UCR Program are asked to prepare supplemental information to their regular crime reports. The data within the supplemental report is of the nature of crime and the type and value of property stolen and recovered. The supplemental information requires a value be established for property stolen and recovered in each crime except for aggravated assault. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The determination of the value of property stolen is an obligation of the investigating officer, such information is essential to ensure the completeness of a law enforcement investigative report on stolen property.
An agency records only the value of property stolen in its jurisdiction. Likewise, the agency records only the monetary value of recovered property originally stolen from its jurisdiction regardless of who recovers the property or where it was recovered.
