An epic World War II story of valor, sacrifice, and the Rangers who led the way to victory in Europe

It is said that the right man in the right place at the right time can make the difference between victory and defeat. This is the dramatic story of sixty-eight soldiers of the U.S. Army's 2nd Ranger Battalion, D Company -- Dog Company -- who made that difference, time and again.

From D-Day, when German guns atop Pointe du Hoc threatened the Allied landings and the men of Dog Company scaled the ninety-foot cliffs to destroy them; to the thickly forested slopes of Hill 400, in Germany's Hü Forest, where the Rangers launched a desperate bayonet charge across an open field, captured the crucial hill, and held it against all odds. In each battle, the men of Dog Company made the difference.

Dog Company is their unforgettable story -- thoroughly researched and vividly told by acclaimed combat historian Patrick K. O'Donnell -- a story of extraordinary bravery, courage, and determination. America had many heroes in World War II, but few can say that, but for them, the course of the war may have been very different. The right men, in the right place, at the right time -- Dog Company.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“No one doubts the bravery of the gallant men of Dog Company…And no one is more qualified to tell the tale than Patrick K. O'Donnell.”

InfoDad.com, 11/29/12
“Fine and finely detailed…There is plenty of action here, plenty of detail about battles major and minor, plenty of heroism to contemplate, and plenty of material to keep readers fascinated by the events of World War II interested.”

Philadelphia Tribune, 11/18/12

“Thoroughly researched and vividly told.”

Reference and Research Book News, December 2012

“Written in a dramatic narrative style for general readers and WWII history buffs, the book emphasizes the roles and relationships of individual members of the company.”

Midwest Book Review, November 2012

“[An] excellent contribution to military history shelves, thoroughly accessible to scholars and lay readers alike.”

San Antonio Express-News, 12/21/12

“The daring combat actions by ‘boys' from America's heartland comes to life in
Dog Company…O'Donnell captures the intensity of the mission.”

Marion Sentinel, 12/20/12

“Tells [Tom Ruggiero's] D-Day story in tight detail. It also provides fresh and intimate looks at how the Plymouth native and others in Dog Company went on to fight their way across France and into Germany. O'Donnell's story captures the essence of bravery in a man we can all still proudly honor.”

Milwaukee Public Library blog, 12/28/12
“If you enjoyed Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, then this new book on D Day…will be right up your alley. Well researched and written, the story of a company of US Army Rangers and their near impossible mission is a tale of honor, gallantry, persistence and death.”

Seattle Times, 1/6/13
“O'Donnell skillfully tells the tale of the 68 soldiers who made up the 2nd Ranger Battalion… Though there have been hundreds of books that tackled D-Day, none have given so much detail to this one company or to Pointe du Hoc… O'Donnell does an admirable job presenting the story of the Rangers in such minute detail that you feel you are there during the assault…
Dog Company helps keep that sacrifice alive with the cinematic telling of a small story that forever changed history.”

inReads.com, 12/11/13:

“[O'Donnell] writes vividly about war…Readers of
Dog Company will be immersed in the soldiers' lives from training all the way to the battles they fought.”

Lima News, 2/10/13

“O'Donnell paints a vivid picture of the valor possessed by the 68 soldiers of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, D company during World War II. If you enjoyed ‘Band of Brothers,' this story is for you.”

The Key Reporter, 3/12/13

“Powerful, immediate and poignant.  The men of Dog Company richly deserve this remembrance of their valor.”

Midwest Book Review, March 2013

“A powerful account of World War II and a 'must' for any military history holding.”

America in WWII, April 2013

“O'Donnell effectively captures the story of these Dog Company Rangers in combat…A fast-paced personal story…It blows away the dust of history.”

WestLife, 3/27/13

“Provides an hour-by-hour account of Dog Company's stand against a much larger German force.”

World War II, May/June 2013

Kirkus Reviews, 10/1/12
“[An] inspiring story…O'Donnell engagingly describes how a dedicated team was built out of the specialist training it received, but he is at his best presenting the fortunes and shocks of battle as the months of planning and training were blown away in a series of mischances that also fortuitously safeguarded the unit from delayed pre-invasion bombing runs…A worthy tribute honoring each member of a small group of volunteers who responded to the call of duty.”

Bookviews blog, November 2012

“The story of the heroism of the men defies the imagination, but it is real and told well by a distinguished military historian.”

Politics & Patriotism blog, 11/7/12
“A fast-paced read that'll redefine your understanding of the U.S. Army Rangers in Europe during Word War Two.”

Roanoke Times, 11/9/12

“A fine tale of heroism and sacrifice marked by many personal interviews with the very few present-day survivors.”

Kingman Standard, 11/7/12
“Carefully documented and researched…[O'Donnell's] interviews of many surviving veterans have captured their stories in fitting detail…This is a 5-star book and one which every veteran can be proud of having on their bookshelf!”

WomanAroundTown.com, 11/18/12

General Doug Brown USA (Ret.) Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command 2003-2007

"This is an incredible story of courage under fire, leadership at all levels and bravery beyond comprehension. The bravery and leadership of Dog Company lives on in today's Army Rangers as they take the fight to America's enemies in the Global War on Terror. This is the story of real American heroes and no one can tell the story better than Patrick K. O'Donnell."

Douglas Waller, author of Wild Bill Donovan: The Spymaster Who Created the OSS and Modern American Espionage

"Patrick O'Donnell has set the gold standard for war histories rich in color, drama and detail. With
Dog Company, he's hit that high mark once more. Drawing on a trove of government reports plus hundreds of in-depth interviews with the men who fought, O'Donnell takes you from the scaling of Pointe du Hoc's murderous cliffs on the Normandy coast to the Battle of the Bulge and into the rubble of Germany. World War II comes to life through the eyes of this one company of intrepid U.S. Army Rangers."

Clive Cussler, New York Times bestselling author

"A great American writer."

Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer prize winning author of Day of Battle

"Remarkable and very readable...vivid."

“One of the world’s preeminent military historians.”—Military Review, U.S. Army

Combat historian, bestselling author, and public speaker Patrick K. O'Donnell has written 13 critically acclaimed books that recount the epic stories of America's wars from the Revolution to Iraq. A Fellow at Mount Vernon, he is the recipient of numerous national book awards. O’Donnell is a premier expert on elite and special operations units and irregular warfare.

His books are described as “nonfiction that reads like fiction.”

O’Donnell’s forthcoming book is THE UNVANQUISHED: The Untold Story of Lincoln’s Special Forces, the Manhunt for Mosby’s Rangers, and the Shadow War That Forged America’s Special Operations.

James L. Swanson, bestselling author of MANHUNT, raved, “A spectacular book from one of America’s finest historians. Patrick K. O’Donnell has unearthed a magnificent Civil War epic. Mesmerizing, action-packed, and original, this triumphant narrative is destined for the screen. Impossible to put down.” Historian and bestselling author John Bruning declared, “Once or twice a generation, an extraordinary historian will rediscover a long-buried aspect of our past and restore its significance in the public eye through masterful research and storytelling. Patrick O'Donnell has done exactly that with his brilliant new book, THE UNVANQUISHED.”

About the bestselling THE INDISPENSABLES: The Diverse Soldier-Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington Across the Delaware, the AP declared, “an engrossing tale.” WASHINGTON’S IMMORTALS: The Untold Story of an Elite Regiment Who Changed the Course of the Revolution, the Wall Street Journal raved, “Combat writing at its best.” The prestigious Journal of the American Revolution named it, “One of the 100 best books on the Revolution of All Time.”

His other books include THE UNKNOWNS: The Untold Story of America’s Unknown Soldier and WWI’s Most Decorated Heroes Who Brought Him Home, FIRST SEALS: The Untold Story of the Forging of America's Most Elite Unit; and DOG COMPANY: The Boys of Pointe du Hoc - The Rangers Who Accomplished D-Day's Toughest Mission and Led the Way Across Europe. His bestseller, BEYOND VALOR, portrays the gripping tales of WWII Ranger and Airborne veterans and won the William E. Colby Award for Outstanding Military History. O'Donnell's WE WERE ONE: Shoulder to Shoulder With the Marines Who Took Fallujah is required reading for Marines and appeared on the Commandant’s Professional Reading List, as did GIVE ME TOMORROW: The Korean War’s Greatest Untold Story – The Epic Stand Of The Marines Of George Company.

His books have been Main or Alternate selections of Book of the Month, History, and Military History Book Clubs. Reviewers from media outlets as diverse as The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, Jerusalem Post, C-SPAN, and National Public Radio (NPR) have hailed his publications.

O’Donnell is the leading expert on the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency and America’s special operations forces in WWII. His four award-winning books on the subject include: FIRST SEALS; OPERATIVES, SPIES, AND SABOTEURS: The Unknown Story of the Men and Women of WWII’s OSS; THE BRENNER ASSIGNMENT: The Untold Story of the Most Daring Spy Mission of WWII; and THEY DARED RETURN: The True Story of Jewish Spies Behind the Lines in Nazi Germany (also known as “The Real Inglorious Bastards”).

In 2012, at a ceremony attended by the leadership of America’s intelligence and special operations community, The OSS Society presented O’Donnell with the prestigious John Waller Award for exceptional intelligence and special operations history scholarship.

O'Donnell not only writes about combat — he has experienced it firsthand. During the Iraq war, he was embedded with military units as the only civilian combat historian to volunteer and spend three months in Iraq documenting the experiences of troops in battle. He fought with a Marine rifle platoon (Lima Company 3/1) during the Battle of Fallujah, surviving several ambushes and a firefight with Chechen insurgents, experiences he recounts in WE WERE ONE.

He has written for Military History Quarterly (MHQ) and WWII Magazine and is a frequent contributor to various nationally recognized publications.

As an expert on WWII espionage, special operations, and counterinsurgency on the modern battlefield, the historian has assisted with the writing and production of scores of documentaries produced by the BBC, the History Channel, and others. His book THEY DARED RETURN is the source material for the award-winning documentary The Real Inglorious Bastards. He has appeared as a guest on countless television and radio shows on NPR, Discovery, and other networks.

O’Donnell also provided historical consulting for DreamWorks’ award-winning miniseries “Band of Brothers” and the billion-dollar Medal of Honor game franchise.

O'Donnell has been studying World War II and modern war since childhood and has a passion for finding ways to preserve the oral histories of America’s combat veterans for generations to come. Nearly two decades ago, he founded The Drop Zone, the first online military oral history project and virtual museum. This award-winning website contains many of the thousands of interviews O’Donnell personally conducted with veterans and their adversaries, making it one of the largest private collections of historical materials from elite and special operations troops.

The author’s skills and expertise have been tapped by private sector firms and government agencies, including DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). He has also been selected to lecture at numerous agencies and branches of the armed forces, such as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), U.S. Army Special Forces, U.S. ARMY, and USMC.

O’Donnell credits serendipity for leading him in the right direction. The stories he tells somehow always find him.

operations unit in WW2) climbing the cliffs of Normandy at Pointe -du Hoc on
DDay June 6,1944 with German troops firing machine guns down on you, as
well as grenades, while you're avoiding hanging mines set to kill you as well.
You're in a group of 225 men to start wth and 48 hours later only 90 of the
original group are still fit to fight. This is an amazing story of valor and
sacrifice of there Army Rangers. This group specializes in taking on
some of the most dangerous and suicidal missions in Europe
including a frontal assault with fixed bayonets over an open
field. These Rangers are also involved in battles at Brest, the
Lochrist German battery, Hill 63 and Hill 400 as well as in the
Hurtgen Forest. Most of the Rangers are very young "citizen
soldiers" trained to go up against battle hardened German
troops.Oftentimes things don't go according to plan but
these Rangers learn go innovate and make it happen.
I think if you listen to President Ronald Reagan's speech
on June 6,1984 ( the 40th anniversary of X-Ray) at Pointe duHoc
Normandy titled "The Boys of Pointe -duHoc " it tells why one
should definitely read this book. These Rangers came as
liberators and not as conquerors. I highly recommend this
    great book.

I rated this book with 4 stars because I was very impressed with the author's research which has the effect of a first person account of the history of the Rangers who were assigned the D-Day task of over-coming the defenses at Point de Hoc. The book then follows this unit through the proceeding months as they meet and defeat the German enemy some of whom are members of the German armies most elite troops. In a quote from a German soldier's after action report, the soldier states, "these are better soldiers than us." I would strongly recommend this book to any/all WWII buffs who are interested in the actions of an actual fighting unit, their training, morale, psychological outlook, individual bravery, skills with both their issued weapons and training with enemy weapons. Input and training received from the British Commando's. If the bulk of the American Army had been as proficient both physically and psychologically as this unit as well as the American Paratroopers the war would have ended in late 1944.

If you've ever read about Normandy, seen the movie "The Longest Day", or even just heard Reagan's famous speech you know about the "Boys of Pointe du Hoc." But many don't know the whole story of how their ranger unit was organized, how they trained for their supreme mission, or what happened to them after D-Day. This excellently told story fills those gaps. After D-Day the rangers were called upon to lead the assault on one of the fortresses defending Cherbourg - a suicide mission. The story of how the rangers pulled that off is worth the price of the book alone. After that it was East - toward the Reich and more war until the foe was defeated. An added bonus is that it is called Dog Company but the author does a great job of "sneaking in" the entire battalion's story. After all, Dog Company didn't train, live, or fight in a vacuum. I don't want to spoil the book, but a great story and tribute to a gutsy bunch of guys who went above and beyond when their country called.

Dog Company puts the reader in the action with the many members of one of the first Ranger Company Divisions fighting towards the end of WWII. One must understand that the majority of our WWII, actual fighting men, were late teens and early twenty year olds. Doing what they were told to do, almost with no questions asked, almost doing impossible tasks, in order to triumph on D Day and the last days of the war. The author did his homework letting the reader know the odds our boys were up against. Germany and the rest of the Axis forces were a well seasoned enemy that had been fighting together for years before the U.S. entered the war. He explains why the Rangers and men in all branches of service during WWII are called "the Greatest Generation." Had it not been for these young boys and young men whom we get to know so well in the book, are the reason we are able to enjoy the life they fought and died for. Dog Company: The Boys of Pointe du Hoc should be required reading for all students in high school most of which have no idea what and who was involved in the most horrific war the United States has ever fought.

Very well written and researched book with lots of personal anecdotes and quotes from the men at the heart of the famous battle to capture the Pointe du Hoc gun emplacements at the western end of Omaha Beach on DDay. The book then goes on to cover the Rangers' desperate hand to hand fighting to capture Hill 400 in the battle of Hürtgen Forest in the first two weeks in December 1944. Patrick O'Donnell's style is fluid and hold the reader's interest, made especially more relevant when one learns that he personally interviewed many of the survivors of this famous regiment and indeed became good friends with them.
