NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Nashville Police said a 15-year-old is in custody after fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy and shooting his 16-year-old sister at Red Caboose Park on Wednesday just before 8 p.m.

Police said there was a fight between females in a parking lot at the popular park when other teens joined the fight. Someone pulled a gun and fired shots.

The 16-year-old girl was able to go to the Nashville Fire Department station near the park. Her 13-year-old brother, identified by police as Aayden Hayes, was hit multiple times and taken to the hospital where he died.

“This is a bad night for Nashville,” Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said at the scene. “Two teens, brothers and sisters, 16 and 13, are victims of violent crimes.”

The 16-year-old was able to provide information on who was involved in the shooting. Police said officers found the teenage male matching the suspect’s name provided by the victim walking about 1/4-mile from the park on Highway 70.

After questioning, the 15-year-old was booked and charged with criminal homicide and attempted criminal homicide in the shooting. The gun he allegedly used was located by a dog with US Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) discarded in the grass along the path the teenager was walking.

Aaron said most of the teens involved in the fight appear to be middle school students.

“This is a very popular park. Frankly, these are kids,” Aaron said. “The people involved in this are middle school students. We’ll get to the bottom of this to see what is the trigger that caused it all.”

There were several witnesses at the park that saw the shooting that weren’t with those involved. Detectives are interviewing these people.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell posted a statement on social media after the shooting.

“My heart breaks tonight for the families who experienced first hand the tragedy of gun violence in a park in Bellevue. I am grateful to first responders who immediately rendered aid as well as the Metro police officers who quickly apprehended a possible suspect. We are awaiting further details from the investigation,” O’Connell said.
