Man accused of murdering homeless man with axe in First Hill pleads not guilty

The suspect accused of killing a homeless man with an axe in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday. Liam Kryger, 25, is charged with first-degree murder after the victim, Daravuth Van, was found dead on Feb. 22. In court, Kryger and his attorney did not contest the $5 million bail that was previously set. According to court filings, Van was sleeping in an entranceway to the Town Hall Seattle event center when Kryger attacked him. Neighbors said Van was homeless and had been staying in the area for a while. The Everett City Council approved a request by police to apply for a $300,000 grant though the state Department of Commerce. If the grant is awarded, police have asked to spend $280,000 to obtain and install the system and use the remaining $20,000 to cover the costs of training. Between 2018 and 2023, shots fired calls increased 126%, drive-by shootings went up 275% and murders doubled, according to data police provided in the grant application letter. There has also been a significant surge in gang crimes, police said.
