Signs and flags were already popping up in downtown Rome expressing support for former President Donald Trump before his visit to Rome later today.
His rally will take place at The Forum.
Rome officials, downtown businesses and area residents were seen gearing up for the event which is expected to bring thousands to the downtown area.
Rome residents and visitors alike should expect delays and street closings throughout the day and late into the evening.
While the rally doesn’t start until 5 p.m., Forum doors open at 11 a.m. and local officials are preparing for a major influx of people and traffic congestion all day. Over 20,000 people attended Trump’s 2020 rally at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport. The Forum’s capacity is about 4,500, but the Town Green in front of it can likely hold a few thousand more.
Rome and Floyd County police, along with the sheriff’s office, county emergency management agency and Georgia State Patrol, are working together with the Secret Service on the plans.
They’re alerting motorists to expect delays, and likely changes in some traffic patterns as Trump’s motorcade travels through the county into the downtown area. Drivers who aren’t attending the campaign event are advised to take Ga. Loop 1 to route around centralized locations, and think about perhaps rescheduling their trip.
“Attendees are asked to prepare for the event much like visiting an airport prior to arriving at security checkpoints — no sticks, no umbrellas, no liquids, no chairs, no cigarette lighters nor any weapons of any type will be permitted past the event entry screening area,” a memo from Rome Police Chief Denise Downer McKinney reads. “No overnight camping is permitted at the Town Green or in the downtown Rome area.”
Parking will be prohibited at the Forum parking deck as well as at the Historic Floyd County Courthouse. Parking areas will be open at Barron Stadium, Ridge Ferry Park, and behind the levee at Heritage Park.
All trails between the Law Enforcement Center at West Sixth Avenue and the Hawthorne Suites hotel at Second Avenue will be closed beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, including the trail across the John Ross Pedestrian Bridge.
Tribune Street and the westbound outside lane of Second Avenue at Hawthorne Suites will be shut down from 9 a.m. through 7 p.m.
“Please follow your trusted news sources (on social media) as information about parking and traffic control may change quickly,” the agencies are warning.
