MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WJLA) — The fifth person arrested for a shooting in Maryland that left a 2-year-old dead was in the U.S. illegally and had prior detainments, according to information from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The agency said the Nilson Granados-Trejo who was arrested recently for charges related to the Feb. 8 shooting, had been ordered deported in 2022 from Montgomery County but released on two separate times by county corrections officials, the agency said.
WJLA Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell recently followed along with a group of ICE detainers in Montgomery County and learned that the County, as a matter of policy, has failed to honor 119 detainer requests for custody and deportation.
Granados-Trejo, 25, charged with first and second-degree murder remains in the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
Police said on Feb. 8, he and several others were involved in a shooting near Langley Park. Witnesses told WJLA that a group known to sell fentanyl in the area opened fire on another group trying to enter their territory.
Caught in the crossfires that night were two-year-old Jeremy Poou-Caceres, who would later die from his injuries, and his mother, who was wounded but survived.
Several others have since been arrested, a 15-year-old male from Takoma Park, a 16-year-old male from Hyattsville, 33-year-old Israel Fuentes Jr. of Lewisdale and 28-year-old Johnny Turcios. The two teens were charged as adults, and Fuentes and Turcious were both denied bond.
Two more persons of interest are sought in this case after they were seen on camera allegedly fleeing in a 2003 gold Ford Explorer.
