New data suggests parents ‘leaving’ the government education system

A teenage boy who threw milk over a group of women travelling on a boat has been suspended from his prestigious school and issued a caution by police.

Footage emerged online last month showing the moment the 16-year-old boy stood on a bridge over the Yarra River in Melbourne's CBD and poured the milk over the group.

The woman were spending the afternoon in a GoBoat at the time, and ended up with their belongings and food covered in the liquid.

Police launched an investigation into the incident amid videos of the dousing going viral, including on the teenager's own account, with the matter now finalised.

"A 16-year-old boy has been issued a caution for unlawful assault following an incident in Melbourne where milk was sprayed on people travelling in boats along the Yarra," Victoria Police confirmed to SkyNews.com.au.

"Vision of the incident, which occurred on Saturday 27 January, was shared widely on social media. The matter is now complete."

Melbourne Grammar School - where the teenage boy is a student - also launched its own probe into the incident, with reports eggs were further thrown at people.

In addition to the school suspension, the teenager has been forced to apologise for his actions and ordered to undergo counselling.

"After Melbourne Grammar School learnt that a student may have been involved in an incident in which eggs and milk were thrown on people travelling in boats on the Yarra River a thorough investigation was carried out," Headmaster Philip Grutzner said.

"We continue to have the firm view that this behaviour was completely unacceptable and have treated the matter with the utmost seriousness.

"Although the incident occurred well outside the purview of the school, we have worked with that student and his parents. A combination of suspension and other punitive action, reparation, apologies and counselling has been implemented."

Melbourne Grammar School, which charges $41,640 for a year 11 student to attend, has also moved to reinforce its values in the wake of the incident.

"We endeavour to instil an understanding of the importance of respect and care for others in our students every day in which students act responsibly and are accountable for their actions," Mr Grutzner said.
