San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw left the Super Bowl with an Achilles injury in the second quarter.
On first glance, most fans and analysts thought Greenlaw suffered a freak non-contact injury as he was running onto the field. However, Greenlaw missed Week 18 due to Achilles tendinitis and battled the injury in the playoffs.
The San Francisco 49ers weren’t surprised by the injury
Per David Lombardi with The Athletic, 49ers linebacker Fred Warner said Greenlaw was battling the Achilles injury heading into the Super Bowl and knew why Greenlaw was injured the moment it happened:
“I was sick to my stomach,” Warner said after the game. “I’m still sick. I seen him at halftime and I’m just, I’m crying because I’m so hurt for him. And obviously I wanted to win this for him. Sickening.
“He’s just been dealing with that same Achilles injury for the last few weeks. So when we ran out on the field together and I see him drop down, I knew exactly what happened.”
Greenlaw was listed as having an Achilles injury for the injury reports for the divisional round and NFC Championship Game. However, Greenlaw was not listed on the Super Bowl injury report for having the injury.
Per Pro Football Focus, Greenlaw’s replacement in the Super Bowl, Oren Burks, struggled against the Chiefs offense on Sunday. He gave up nine catches on the nine passing plays he was targeted. Burks allowed a touchdown. He earned a 32.1 coverage grade and a 35.3 overall grade for his play on Sunday.
Burks also missed a tackle.

Shedeur Sanders got reality check from police officer during speeding stop
Shedeur Sanders was pulled over for speeding on two separate occasions in Ohio this month, and an interaction he had with one police officer proved that the former Colorado star is not a universally recognizable figure. Sanders was pulled over on June 6 in Medina County, Ohio, after police allegedly observed him driving 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. A video of the stop that was obtained by TMZ shows that the officer who first spoke with Sanders was confused after the Cleveland Browns rookie said he had a house nearby but handed over a Mississippi driver’s license. Sanders explained that he has a Mississippi license because he attended college there, which was of course during his tenure at Jackson State. The officer still seemed perplexed, at which point the other officer at the scene told Sanders, “He doesn’t know who you are, but that’s fine.” The first officer then seemed to make the connection and said, “Oh, Sanders, gotcha, okay.” Sanders was still given a ticket, but he reportedly failed to appear in court for a hearing on June 16. The following day, he was pulled over and given another speeding ticket for allegedly driving over 100 mph. To his credit, Sanders appeared to be respectful during the stop and did not pull the “do you know who I am?” card. A Browns spokesperson says Sanders is in the process of “taking care of” both speeding tickets. Sanders is competing for a starting job after the Browns drafted him in the fifth round. There were some concerns about the quarterback’s maturity leading up to the draft, and it looks like he might want to consider letting his foot off the gas pedal a bit when he’s driving around.
Shock candidate emerges for Knicks head coaching job
The New York Knicks' search for Tom Thibodeau's replacement is well underway. After a calamitous stretch that saw the Knicks get rejected in their requests to speak with multiple under-contract coaches, the front office appears to be back on track. The franchise reportedly met with Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown during the week commencing June 16. While Jason Kidd remains a potential sleeper in the Knicks coaching search, it appears a new candidate has emerged. According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the Knicks have begun discussing hiring James Borrego. The former Charlotte Hornets head coach spent this past season as an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans. “Borrego, a CAA client, is known around the league for his offensive creativity and analytics-forward approach,” Edwards III wrote. "Borrego spent last season as an assistant coach on Willie Green’s staff in New Orleans and was last a head coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-22. His record in those four seasons doesn’t pop off the screen, but Borrego led the struggling franchise to a 43-win season just before he was let go.” Borrego would be a bold choice to replace Thibodeau. In many ways, he's the "anti-Thibs." New York would pivot away from a defense-first mindset and embrace a modernized offense as its calling card. It would look toward Borrego to unlock the undoubted potential within the roster. Still, if the Knicks did opt to hire Borrego, they would need to find a defensive-minded assistant coach. That's the only way they could generate the balance needed to be a contending team. We saw the Los Angeles Lakers do something similar last season after hiring JJ Redick. Borrego may be a shock candidate, but he's earned his chance at another head coaching gig. He did an admirable job with a horrendous Hornets team and there's no telling how far he could take New York. The only major stumbling block will likely be questions surrounding his ability to handle the pressure-cooker environment that comes with the Knicks. Still, after a rough start to their coaching search, the Knicks finally appear to be moving in the right direction. Borrego may or may not get the job, but at least the front office is knocking on the right doors now.
Canucks Reportedly Open to Trading Elias Pettersson, But Only Under One Condition
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Canucks would be open to trading Elias Pettersson, but the one condition is that they get a good center back. The Vancouver Canucks are headed into a crucial offseason after missing the playoffs and falling well short of expectations. But despite the internal drama and a steep drop in production from superstar Elias Pettersson, the organization appears committed to keeping its franchise forward in place; however, they would be willing to listen to offers of a trade. If the Canucks get a good center in return, they would trade Pettersson There is one condition, however, which is that they get a good center in return, per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman. 'The Canucks aren't trading Elias Pettersson unless they're getting a good center back.' - Elliotte Friedman Pettersson's 2024-25 campaign marked a steep downturn in productivity, with the forward scoring just 15 goals and 45 points in 64 games, which was a massive contrast to the 102 points he posted in the 2022-23 season. Lingering injury issues and ongoing locker room tension with then-teammate J.T. Miller ruined his year, and raised speculation about whether Vancouver might explore a trade before Pettersson earns the right to block trades out. The reason for this is that once his full no-move clause kicks in on July 1, the Canucks will need his approval for any trade they want to make. Pettersson signed an eight-year, $92.8 million extension in March 2024, which goes all the way until the 2031-32 season. However, another NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, truly believes the Canucks will hang on to Pettersson for the duration or his contract, or at least most of it. Pettersson, meanwhile, acknowledged his season-long struggles back in March. 'I'll just be honest: I haven't been the way I want to be this year. I haven't played to expectations I have on myself, the franchise has on me. So I'll be the first to tell you, but that's in the past,' Pettersson told Sportsnet. 'I just want to take these last 22 games, plus more hopefully, and play my best hockey. I wish we had more wins, I wish we had played a lot better, but can't dwell on that anymore. And just trying to look ahead.' Buckle up Canucks fans, the next few weeks are going to be very, very interesting and entertaining.
Ex-Yankees Slugger, Home Run King Ready For New Gig
Sayonara, Luke Voit. The one-time New York Yankees slugger arrived in Japan Sunday, ready to suit up for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball. "I'm very excited to finally be in Japan. I can't wait to get on ground at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi and run around," he said, according to a report from Japan's Pacific League. News surfaced earlier this month that Voit was heading overseas. Voit made his MLB debut in 2017 with the Cardinals. St. Louis sent Voit to the Yankees before the 2018 MLB trade deadline. He provided the pinstripes with instant offense, hitting 14 home runs in just 39 games. Splitting time in 2019 between first base and designated hitter, Voit was one of seven Yankees to hit at least 20 home runs that season. The list includes Gleyber Torres (38), Gary Sanchez (34), Brett Gardner (28), Aaron Judge (27), DJ LeMahieu (26), Voit (21) and Gio Urshela (21). Voit's best season came in 2020, when he led the majors with 22 home runs in 56 games during the COVID-shortened regular season. The burly right-handed hitter finished ninth that year in voting for American League MVP. But injuries would begin to rob Voit of time in the lineup and the Yankees traded him to the Padres ahead of the 2022 season. San Diego later sent Voit to Washington as part of the 2022 trade deadline blockbuster deal which brought Juan Soto from the Nationals to the Padres. Voit spent the 2023 campaign with the Brewers, but only played in 22 games for Milwaukee, hitting .221 with no home runs. Voit spent the last two years playing in the Mexican League. He slugged 23 home runs last year in 81 games for Tabasco, and went deep 12 times this year in 41 games for Quintana Roo. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Voit "might have something to offer the Golden Eagles as a veteran bat. The Eagles are last in NPB in home runs, with only 25 long balls over 66 games this season." Voit hit 95 home runs in 508 MLB games during his nine seasons in the majors. It's possible a strong showing this summer in Japan could lead to a big-league spring training invite next year.
