Suspect in DC, Prince George's deadly crime spree killed in officer-involved shooting

A carjacking suspect linked to a Monday night Washington, D.C. homicide has died after an officer-involved shooting in Prince George's County early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Around 4:30 a.m., theNew Carrollton Police Department (NCPD) said the shooting, involving two of its officers, occurred near a laundromat at 7575 Annapolis Road.NCPD said the man was taken into custody and to the hospital, where he later died.

It was revealed later by Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll that the suspect was involved in several incidents including a deadly carjacking in D.C.

"The violence we saw yesterday was senseless and tragic and we know that two families are experiencing an unthinkable tragedy," D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

Here's a timeline as the deadly crime spree unfolded, according to MPD and other law enforcement:

At 5:45 p.m. Monday, the suspect entered a parked vehicle and shot the driver in the 900 block of K Street Northwest, and fled on foot. Police said the victim is in critical condition. A family spokesperson has identified that victim as Mike Gill. Gill was on the D.C. Board of Elections until Jan. 2023. He currently serves as the Senior Vice President for Capital Markets for the Housing Policy Council. He's a husband and father to three children.

Around 7:05 p.m., the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE but was unsuccessful.

Then around 7:17 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of 3rd Street and N Street NE after reports of a shooting. Police said the suspect shot a man and stole his 2016 gray Chrysler 200 with D.C. tags. MPD said the victim was later pronounced dead and the Chrysler 200 was recovered in Takoma Park overnight.

The victim was later identified by police as 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez Jr. Vasquez grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Police saythe suspect then committed multiple other carjackings, including of a Toyota Camry, and then after discarding that vehicle carjacked a rideshare driver's blue Nissan Rogue in University Park in Prince George's County at 11:23 p.m. The University Park police chief says he hit the victim in the head with a gun, and then stole the Nissan. The victim was not seriously hurt per the chief.

Around 2:30 a.m. Maryland State Police say he shot the windshield of a trooper's vehicle near the Rt. 198 exit on I-95 South in Laurel while that trooper was stopped and helping a driver. No one was hit.

Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, police said the suspect drove the Rogue past a D.C. police officer close to DC 295 near Exit 1 and shot the door of the officer's vehicle before driving away. Police said the officer was not injured.

A short time later, Carroll said police were able to locate theRogue inNew Carrollton where the officer-involved shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m.

NCPD said the shooting happened when officerswalked up to the suspect when he "produced two handguns," and the New Carrollton officers discharged their service weapons striking the man. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died. No officers were hurt in this shooting.

"We do believe that the individual that was involved in the incident in Prince George's County is the suspect that committed the assault and attempt to kill here in the District of Columbia in the 900 block of K Street, the attempted carjacking in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE and the homicide that occurred in the area of 3rd Street and N Street NE," Carroll said.

Carroll added that the suspect had a minor criminal history in D.C. and Maryland at the time of the incident, he "may have been in some sort of a mental health crisis or having some mental health issues."

The Gill family issued the following statement:

The incident remains under investigation by theAttorney General's Office. Within 20 business days, officials plan torelease any camera footage that they were able to recover during the incident.
