Two teens are facing criminal charges after one of them, a 13-year-old, was shot and wounded earlier this week by the owner of a car the teens were trying to steal in the South Chicago neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The owner of the car, a Kia SUV, shot the 13-year-old girl in the right shoulder when the owner saw two youths trying to take the vehicle around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday in the 8200 block of South Commercial Avenue, police said.

The girl and her alleged accomplice, a 14-year-old male, were each charged as juveniles with attempting to possess a stolen vehicle and criminal damage to property worth less than $500, police said.

WBBM-TV first reported the charges Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, the girl remained at Comer Children’s Hospital. The shooting remained under investigation. Court information on the teens wasn’t immediately available.
