Congressman Blumenauer to Introduce Legislation to Abolish ICE

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) announced that he will join Congressman Mark Pocan (WI-02) to introduce legislation that would abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The legislation, which will be introduced in the coming weeks, would dismantle ICE and establish a commission to provide recommendations to Congress on how to restore a more humane and service-oriented system that both protects Americans and respects immigrants.

"We should be prioritizing the protection of families and our borders in a humane and thoughtful way. People should be treated with compassion and respect. ICE is simply not doing that," said Blumenauer. "Trump and his administration have made the agency so toxic that it's time to abolish ICE, and start over."

In 2002, Blumenauer voted against the formation of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. He was one of the first members of Congress to call for ICE to be abolished, making his announcement on Sunday, June 24.
