A long-time Charleston County deputy is throwing his name in the race for Charleston County Sheriff.

Lt. Alan Ali announced Tuesday that he intends to campaign for the role of sheriff.

Ali believes the sheriff's office could benefit from a more hands-on leadership style, which he said he plans to bring.

"I think it's hearing the personal stories of people in and around the community, in Edisto Island and McClellanville and around Hollywood, and just hearing these personal stories over and over again, that people are looking for fundamental change," Ali said.

"They want to be protected, but they also want to be respected."

Ali will face incumbent Kristin Graziano, who announced she is seeking re-election, North Charleston Police Department Capt. Rick Keys, Folly Beach Deputy Chief Rocky Burke, and Former Mount Pleasant Police Chief Carl Ritchie.
