SBS’s behemoth WSKQ-FM (Mega 97.9 FM) has long been the most-listened to Spanish language station in the country. Now, it’s notched a new milestone. Per Nielsen’s recently released Audio Report, La Mega is now the top-ranked station in the metropolitan New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area in key demos, regardless of language and format.
WSKQ-FM was ranked #1 for the coveted 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 demos, in all dayparts.
The station’s share for the highly-desirable 18-34 demo was highest, at 10.0. That means that out of the entire 18-34 NY metro area radio audience, 10% are listening to Mega.
It was a remarkable achievement, even for a station that has long been dominant in New York City, consistently placing among the top five most-listened to in the area.

Through the years, La Mega’s secret has been a blend of provocative morning shows (“El vacilón de la mañana”), well-known hosts (DJ Alex Sensation), and a musical mix that has gone from tropical to urban to dance to a melange of all three with a steady uptempo beat. The station has managed to preserve its core listenership while still bringing in a younger demo. This week’s playlist, for example, featured a mix of reggaeton, bachata and merengue as well as top 40 tracks like Rihanna’s “Work.”
La Mega also fronts several live concerts a year, including the upcoming “Mega Mezcla,” an urban music show taking place April 22 at Prudential Center and featuring performances by Nicky Jam, Farruko and Cosculluela, among others.
