Look up your college's numbers in the latest campus crime reports

Degree-granting institutions that receive federal funding are required to compile statistics on campus crimes for the three preceding years under the Clery Act, passed in 1990 and named after 19-year-old Jeane Clery, who was raped and murdered in her college residence hall.

Reported offenses include homicides, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, auto theft, arson, and aggravated assault. Additionally, colleges and universities are mandated to report hate crimes, and violence against women, as well as arrests and disciplinary actions.

In 2022, 38,059 criminal offenses were reported, up 8% from 2019. The most prominent change was for auto thefts, which rose by about 120% in 2022 compared to 2019. Sexual offenses — rape and fondling — represented more than a third of the offenses. At least 77 murders were reported, including three at the University of Virginia, where a student shot and killed three football players, and two at Bridgewater College.
