Couple arrested after baby tests positive for fentanyl

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 9-month-old baby was sent to the hospital after medical staff said he tested positive for fentanyl.

On Saturday around 11:13 a.m., deputies responded to Augusta University Medical Center for an overdose and spoke with the child’s mom, Rosa Solis-Garcia, 37.

Garcia told deputies her son was lying in their bed when she noticed him holding a $20 bill that she had under her pillow, according to the incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Garcia stated she took the bill away, and a few minutes later, the boy stopped moving.

According to the report, she noticed the boy’s lips were turning blue and his skin turning pale. During that time, her boyfriend, Thomas Wright, 41, arrived and began CPR while she called 911.

Garcia told deputies that she believed the $20 bill might’ve had something that caused him to get sick. The incident report states Garcia told deputies her daughter found the money in front of her home and gave it to Garcia.

According to the arrest warrant, the pair admitted that Wright uses narcotics inside the home.

Garcia is accused of having fentanyl along with a cut straw in her purse while the child was in her care.

The pair allegedly allowed the boy to play with contaminated money, which led to the boy ingesting the narcotic, the warrant states.

Both are charged with cruelty to children in the second degree, and Garcia also has a hold for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to inmate bookings.
