An Eastern Iowa state lawmaker is trying to get a satanic display at the State Capitol removed.

Brad Sherman, a Republican from Williamsburg, is now calling for Governor Kim Reynolds to remove the "blasphemous display" arguing it goes against the Iowa Constitution. He is also calling on legislation next year to that would prohibit satanic displays in the Capitol building and on state owned property, and also legislation that would make it legal to display the Ten Commandments in the Capitol building and in public schools.

He laid out his argument in his newsletter here.Sherman represents Iowa District 91 which covers all of Iowa County and some of Johnson County.

Other GOP lawmakers told the Des Moines Register they would oppose the government limiting freedom of speech.

"My observation as an Iowan and a State Representative, I don’t want the state evaluating and making determinations about religions," State Rep. Jon Dunwell said on X, formerly Twitter, "I am guided by the First Amendment of the US Constitution."
