Vice President Kamala Harris told a crowd of supporters Thursday, that Americans don’t have to “abandon their faith” to agree that the government should not be restricting a woman’s ability to get an abortion.

Harris’s comments came during her first remarks following the midterms at an event in Washington, D.C. held by the Democratic National Committee.

Everywhere I went we brought together people fighting for reproductive freedom,” Harris told a crowd of supporters, earning her applause. “People everywhere, from every background, because here’s the thing, one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.”

Prior to the midterms, Vice President Harris held several events focused on reproductive rights. She sat down with activists, state legislators, healthcare providers, legal experts, faith leaders and more.

When President Joe Biden took the podium at the DNC’s event Thursday, he applauded Harris for her work advocating for women's ability to get an abortion.

Those who support ripping away the rights to choose don’t have a clue about the power of women in America, now I think they do,” Biden said Thursday from the DNC. “And by the way no one worked harder to get that message across America than this lady right here.”

However, Indiana state Sen. Jean Breaux, a Democrat who met with Harris during one of her events on abortion rights in Indianapolis, told CNN she thinks there could be a reason behind why the vice president was so eager to pounce on the issue of abortion.

I thought that there was something behind it for her, as well. That she was trying to position herself as a leader on this issue so that she could show America that she has the potential to lead and can articulate an issue that is resonating with voters all across the country,”Breaux said, following the event she attended with Harris.
