DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) -- A local soldier who was wounded while serving in Afghanistan was handed the keys to a mortgage-free house on Thursday in Dayton.
Former U.S. Army Specialist Cody Blevins of Centerville joined the U.S. Army in 2009. Six months later, he was wounded in action while supporting combat operations.
Today, Blevins and his family of five began moving into a house in Dayton after he was accepted into the Military Warriors Support Foundation. That organization provides mortgage-free homes, payment-free vehicles, and financial mentoring for wounded veterans and Gold Star families.
The home was donated by Wells Fargo to the foundation, which then made it available to Blevins.
Sandra Ignaszewski with Military Warriors Support Foundation said this home was an excellent fit for the Blevins family.
"Cody was born and raised here in the Ohio area. He knows it very well. He has the family support here that he needs, he has friends, and additionally, other services," Ignaszewski said.
Ignaszewski said Military Warriors Support Foundation has found homes for 900 veterans throughout the country and helped them pay off $27 million in debt due to their financial mentoring.
