ISLAMABAD -- As Afghanistan approaches two years since the Taliban returned to power, China stands out for its active engagement of the regime, though it is treading cautiously and has not extended formal recognition.

Experts note that Beijing's growing influence in the war-torn country is largely driven by a desire to check militants that threaten its own interests, including Uyghur groups and the Pakistani Taliban.
