Police search for male seen brutally attacking country music concertgoer

CULLMAN, Ala. (WBMA) — Police in Alabama are investigating an incident where a teen was brutally assaulted at "Rock the South."

"Rock the South" is an annual country music festival held in Cullman, Alabama.

18-year-old Reid Watts was attending the concert with his girlfriend and described to WBMA what he said took place prior to him being taken to the hospital.

Some dude said I was spilling beer on him or something along those things, and then I talked to him because I didn't have a drink on me at the time, like I didn't have anything, I talked to him and shook his hand because I thought everything was okay because I explained to him it wasn't me. Then a few minutes later, I was walking back and got hit in the back of the head, then I hit the ground and tried to cover my face then I got knocked out and that was really all I remember," said Watts.

His girlfriend, Katie Hudgins, described what it was like to witness the incident in that moment.

"It was horrible, I'm traumatized, I felt so helpless, because I couldn't get in there and get to him and I had to sit there and watch him get beat up while he's unconscious, it's horrible," she said.

Chase Brown, who was at the musical festival with his girlfriend, stepped in to help, while his girlfriend filmed the incident on his phone. Brown lives in Nashville, Tennessee and said he didn't know any of the people who were involved in the altercation.

I was thinking maybe if it was my little brother or one of my friends. I would hope someone would do the same. It was just so many people standing around watching," said Brown.

Chief David Nassetta of the Cullman Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.

"The video is very chaotic, you can see there's a lot of stuff going on and you can't always rush to judgement and think you have the whole story in just that little snapshot of video. We're interested in seeing what happened before," explained Nassetta. "We're not speculating as far as how it happened or what led to it, but the part we are concerned about is the 5-10 seconds where the victim is laying on the ground and he continues to be hit."

Nassetta said because of the public's help police have a pretty good idea for whom they are looking. He said they want to be thorough in their investigation and are doing their due diligence. He said the person responsible could likely face assault charges.

"The part that were most concerned with is that portion where Mr. Reid is on the ground, it's obvious he is unconscious and he continues to be punched in the face," said Nassetta.

Rock the Southis offering a $10,000 reward and lifetime tickets for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible.

Although Watts was injured, he along with his girlfriend and mother, are all glad that the incident wasn't worse.
